All I need is a Hi def TV, and the gas bill paid.
Anyone willing to swap for 2 Betamax recorders, 3 boxes of tapes, 1 slide rule and 1 AtariXL?ac's lovechild0 -
Been reading so much news on the imminent demise of HD which is bad for us as consumers, but why cant the 2 formats coexist rather than just be limited to the one?So many of our dreams at first seem impossible, then they seem improbable, and then, when we summon the will, they soon become inevitable Christopher Reeve (1953-2004)0

Because carrying twice as much inventory and only realising economies of scale for producing stock at half the volume both cost money.Time is an illusion - lunch time doubly so.0

Definitely don't buy a HD-DVD player now. Sales are now slowing off to a dribble in the main Western markets now that it's clear Blu-ray has won the race.
There's no point having two standards - shops don't want to have to sell two copies of every film. If that was the case then they'd still be selling music on tape and records.
I wouldn't believe the people who are claiming here that HD still has a chance. You only need to read the mainstream newspaper and websites to see HD is dead.0 -
BR is HD!!0

My thoughts are, if you care enough about the latest gadget be it HD, Blu ray, PS3 etc then paying out for an offer like OP posted is not really going to be a waste if you get a couple of years out of the player anyway. No doubt you'll all be rushing out to buy a PS4 or whatever is the latest thing by then anyway so what difference does it make. Is it worth debating over.
The Betamax on ebay was up at £22. If I could buy a DVD player for £120 with free DVD's and sell it for £22 in about £20 years I would be quite happy. :rotfl:
Yeah mate, but the question here is what format do you choose. If you go and buy this HD player and then in 2 months time the last 2 major HD DVD exclusive studios convert to Blu Ray (as some people are predicting), then your pretty much f*ed and will have to go out and buy a Blu Ray player as well (unless you give up on HD). Plus your HD DVD player will be worth a fraction of it's price as not many people will want to buy a dead format.
I strongly believe, from the way this is developing, that the war will be over by the end of this year. If you can afford to spend £120 now and then another £200 later this year then go ahead but if you can't then you should wait it out.
I have a PS3 so I'm lucky in that even if Blu Ray loses my PS3 will still be worth quite a bit as it is foremost a console. Plus sony will still produce their games in Blu Ray and some companies may even decide to still release some of the major films in Blu Ray because of the millions of PS3's that will remain out there (a potential market etc).0 -
Why are people saying that this player will be redundant in 2 months time? That is like saying all DVD players out there will be redundant in 2 months which is absolute nonsense!0

Utter rubbish. There are 2 HD DVD players in the top 10 DVD Players on Amazon.co.uk AND Amazon.com. The first Blu Ray player is way way down the list.0 -
