Now here's a TMI...if you've got recurring genital warts one of the things the docs used to tell you to do was to stop using loo paper because it caused microscopic scratches in your sensitive bits and you'd basically be reinnoculating yourself with the virus. You were told to use soft bits of old t-shirt fabric instead (which you then disposed of, not washed them), or air dry. That was as well as the treatment itself of course. Now given that half the population carries or has carried some sort of HPV at some point, I wonder why more women don't avoid using loo paper when they have infections like thrush or gardenella or HPV, given it does have this scratching effect? I know that I much preferred using cloth wipes after childbirth for example, because they were much more gentle.

Fair point - it is on my 'to try' list and can see many advantages - WM is always in use so I can wash them daily... I dunno though...

the tissues thing...its really not that bad! tissues are pretty thick, and if you fold it over, you dont get snot on your foofoo or anything! I have chronic rhinitus so my nose runs all the time, but its not germy, like colds or flu, so no worrys there.
and as Val said, an old tissue from the hand bag is better than drip-dry!!

I suppose the washing rags instead of toilet roll is similar to the non-disposable nappies for babies? people dont seem to mind them??

Dont like the idea of kidneys or offal etc but if I had to I would!

Dont think there is much I wouldn't do if I really had to....! :)

On that note, we've just invested in a shattaf (sp?) shower or bidet shower, since we saw them used whilst abroad. Not only does it save on loo roll, but you know that you're as clean as having come out of the shower once you've used it. Hygienic and money saving in the long run, really.

As to what I really can't do, it's also kidneys - just the smell when they are unpacked is enough to make me gip.

I am a mooncup user and I was also pretty dubious when I first heard about it, but it has actually significantly changed my life for the better! If you are used to normal, non-aplicator tampons, the mooncup is fairly similar in terms of the 'yuck' factor - and with a mooncup you need to go through that process far less often than if you use tampons. If anyone is really curious for details, feel free to PM me with questions.

In terms of what people used to use before modern 'san pro', I can tell you - my grandmother explained it to me years ago - it was what she used in her day. On reaching adolescence, each girl was presented with a series of 'rags' (clean and well hemmed) which were carefully folded in a certain way, inserted into underwear, and then well washed afterwards. Later they developed disposable sanitary towels made from cotton wool and loose weave fabric which were worn on an elastic belt with special loops, a bit like suspenders, before early varieties of the modern types became available.

She was fascinated with compact tampons which would fit in the coin pocket of my jeans when I was a teenager and discussed these things with her! If she was still around now she would probably be quite amazed at the mooncup.

In terms of things I would never do to save money, umm it would depend on how brassic I was. I think 'minesweeping' of half-finished, abandoned drinks would be mine! Most of the other things people have mentioned on this thread I either already do or could persuade myself to do if necessary. My OH wouldn't let me do most of them though, she is really fussy!
    Trust me - I'm NOT a doctor!

I would like to know more about this - any links?

I soooooooooooo much prefer water cleansing when abroad and would love it installed here. Just slightly concerned that it will be freezing in winter!

    :)

I never minded my own kids' nappies but it was much harder to change pooey nappies when it was for the kids of friends, or even my nephew. On the same tack I wouldn't mind the least washing rags that I'd used for wiping after a pee and could even see myself washing the same for immediate family members. But...I would be less keen to wash rags used for wiping off my own poo, even less so for the kids and I really don't fancy doing it at all for my OH. Maybe this is more a money saving tip for single people only? :rotfl:

You can use a squooshy water bottle, like a bike bidon, to sluice down your bits with warm tap water. That's what we (used to) use after having babies when everything was a bit traumatised. Just don't squoosh anything up yourselves...douches are a bit out of favour healthwise these days. And keep the bottle for this purpose only!

A step too far for me was watching a friend use her toddlers disposable nappies on the fire as fuel. Not something I would have done.

We have an existing thread on this where you'll find more ideas/things you don't want to do, depending on your ilk:

    Money Saving gone TOO far?

I'll add this thread to that one later to keep the replies together.
