heres a few of this years items.

Snap!! I tend to listen to TV as well and glance up when it sounds interesting. I fit projects to programs as well. Detective stories or things with visual clues, I do socks, lots of knit and I don't have to concentrate.

If I'm doing lace shawls I will listen to the radio, otherwise I just make mistakes......
  • Lovely to see a thread with 100% agreement and lots of positve comments! What's great is we have the choice to pick & mix what we do - we get so much encouragement from being able to use MSE & OS forums, which isn't "old" at all, but take the best of "old" too, to fit in with our lives anf families.

Even treatments for wounds is going back to good old basics. When a wound on my leg needed debriding (sp) we used magotts (lungs are shot so could not have surgery) to clean the wound - their excreations are also antibacterial. After they had done their job the dressings were pure menuka honey, the whole cleaning and healing took only 4 months. It was fantastic.

Apparently leeches are also used in some surgery

While I agree OS is deffo the way to go, I don't think I ever want to be without certain modern conveniences (I'm thinking my 'puter and washing machine mainly :rotfl:), I was wondering just how 'old' is 'old style'? How far back are 'we' planning on going?

I agree - I'll be as OS as you like - just leave me my washing machine!

finnigan i see it as as going forward not going back - i've lived like this all my life, when i moved into my own home as a young woman I carried on as my parents had done, through the years i've taken on modern inventions as i've found them beneficial, and turned my back on the ones I didnt want/need - its an evolving process of keeping the good from the old ways and adding in the good from the new. I see my own children, young adults now, moving forward in the same way.

Like a lot of people i got in to this OS more because of a "need to cut down, make do etc" It does however become very addictive and very enjoyable.
Although i have always been quite careful, never really had a great deal of money I have learnt so much more from these threads. THANKYOU!
All this talk of knitting has made me want to take it up again. I use to knit such a lot but that was when my boys were young. They are now in there late 30's and one of 40.
Oh dear how old am i? I dont think you can ever be too OS. Its what you feel comfortable with. But oh how i would love to have my own small holding and live "The Good Life" Too late now at my time of life , me thinks.

'Make do and mend' was the motto in our house - its a shame so many children are growing up with 'a throw-away' attitude. We call it 'being green' in our house but its basically OS at its best.

I would consider myself more OS than not, I still have alot to learn, especially on the batch cooking front etc.

My friend at work (same age as me) cannot understand why I have no interest in celeb mags, fashion or spending my weekends clothes shopping, she was physically horrified to find out that I bought my "timberland" boots at Help the Aged for £4.99, she said she had never been into a charity shop and certainly wouldn't buy shoes, I have to make do I told her, I do not own a credit card, if I have little money in the bank, my children are priority not my feet fashion. (although I have got to say they are really comfortable).

I wish I could of painted a picture of her face when I told her I didn't have a credit card, she looked at me as though I was odd! (odd maybe, but I can sleep at night knowing I don't owe thousands).

I don't think it matters if you're happy to use old style solutions to household problems rather than modern methods. I often wonder how people in the modern world would cope if we ever had to endure the hardships of a Third World War with all the scarcity problems which would arise. Older people have inherited this valuable knowledge from their parents, which often younger people don't have so I reckon it's a case of "use it or lose it". And ever better, pass this knowledge on to the next generation too.
