  • Noooo, u can never be too OS!! :p
Read your post and its a complete reflection of me. Not lucky enough to have a coal fire or a lovely collection of books like that but I would love both :o
I'm just starting out trying to be more OS but am loving every minute :)
    Proud to be OS :j
  • Definitely not. :)

I used to demo dark age crafts and village recreations for English Heritage etc. I found many skills and knowledge from that period to be useful today. Like spinning without a wheel, dyeing, weaving, leather work, and probably many more that are so part of everyday life now I don't even think of them.

I also collect old cook and craft books but we live in a smokefree zone in a modern house with no chimneys. :(
    Put the kettle on. ;)
  • oh! i suspect there are many of us sitting here at the computer with our knitting (surely it isn't just me?). I too have a vast collection of knitting/embroidery leaflets/books, cookery books and lifestyle books from victorian age onwards and I love them. I have to say I don't consider them a collection as such since they are in daily use! I use the recipe books daily, am knitting gloves and a hat from a vintage pattern, dolly clothes from others and my embroidery is from a very old pattern also. The stove is in (24/7) and i'm sitting here with tea, my knitting and you for company :-)

You sound a bit like me. I shouldn't worry about it. You only have one crack at life and so it should be lived as you want to live it, as long as it doesn't hurt anyone else. My parents don't have a TV and they didn't have one when we were growing up in the 70s & 80s either, so it's natural for me to sit & knit or do something else while watching. But it's not that mad.....for instance it meant that I had a lovely chunky jumper for my toddler nephew's Christmas present & lots of pairs of funky bright socks to give my friends. There's so much misery in the world. It does my heart good to know there are so many other people out there who take pleasure in such simple things xx

What a lovely warm post. In fact it's a lovely thread, we all obviously enjoy a gentler, kinder life without the trappings of electronic games, all singing mobile phones, Tiffany bracelets, celebrity magazines. My interest is cross stitch and I love looking at my books, patterns and embroidery cottons and enjoying the designs and glorious colours.

I suspect that because we live this sort of life, we tend to be kinder and more considerate of others. (OR perhaps I'm looking at life through rose-coloured specs!)

  • Even treatments for wounds is going back to good old basics. When a wound on my leg needed debriding (sp) we used magotts (lungs are shot so could not have surgery) to clean the wound - their excreations are also antibacterial. After they had done their job the dressings were pure menuka honey, the whole cleaning and healing took only 4 months. It was fantastic.

i LOVE the bed throw, the one with the pink pillow in the pic

i cant knit or crochet, and my gran made me a blanket very similar
    awww the memories

    Too OS??

i think (and really hope) that mass OS is the way forward
its how things used to be done and we have "evolved" i use the term loosely, to what we are now, and many many of us have taken up the older ways again, for financial reasons, for health reasons, for personal satisfaction reasons, i could go on all day

point is, our children are picking up all this wealth of experience from us, and hopefully will carry it on, living the "modern" way is waning again

OS is the way to go
    all the way!

I agree with the last post. I think OS is very likely to be the way forward as climate change & energy shortages in the future look inevitable. Also, the last two years have REALLY shown a lot of people what happens if you constantly spend & borrow over your means & it's been a scary time for many, and still is. So really, I think we are people with very useful skills that benefit ourselves, our families & communities & potentially the planet. And now I've got to go & use my tin-opening skills because I think my cat is actually going to start eating my leg if I don't go downstairs & feed him!

I think it sounds fantastic so keep it up. I would love to be able to crochet, in fact I've just asked my MIL if she would be able to teach me, I can only knit straight lines so a scarf & I'm well away lol.
I think OS is a great way of life & certainly not something you have taken too far. So long as I can keep my computer in my OS life i'll be happy lol.
