Thanks for the thread OP - in my opinion, you can never be too OS. It's definitely a 'way of life' - even if we do have our modern gadgets to help us be OS. Where would WE all be without our PCs/SlowCookers/BreadMakers - yes we could still be OS but we still HAVE to live a modern life, in a modern world. Many of us need to work for a living, so aren't able to put a casserole in the oven at 2.30pm for the evening meal or bake cakes/bread all afternoon to make sure we've got basic bread/goodies for the family.

I also have lots of 40's/50's/60's knitting/crochet/sewing patterns but unfortunately lost most of my old cookery books after leaving my OH - slowing building up a collection again courtesy of charity shops :).

artydoll - love the pic of you taking your own photo in your scarf ;) - can I ask, how do you do that drop-stitch effect in your scarf please?

I agree with the last post. I think OS is very likely to be the way forward as climate change & energy shortages in the future look inevitable. Also, the last two years have REALLY shown a lot of people what happens if you constantly spend & borrow over your means & it's been a scary time for many, and still is. So really, I think we are people with very useful skills that benefit ourselves, our families & communities & potentially the planet. And now I've got to go & use my tin-opening skills because I think my cat is actually going to start eating my leg if I don't go downstairs & feed him!

I couldn't agree more. So few people now have the skills of simple animal husbandry, growing food, cooking it and making clothes but as fossil fuels run out and people get more energy conscious (and everything will probably get more expensive too) these skills will become more valued. Maybe the board should be re-titled Futurestyle Money saving. :D

What a really lovely post:T I admit I fell into OS for financial reasons but I love it so much now, it's addictive and really has changed the way I think about almost everything. Pre OS you would never have found me in cooking a ginger cake with my DS on a Saturday afternoon. I would have been out hammering the credit card buying more clothes that I really didn't need!

Something else I plan to start this week is to learn to crochet. I am determined to make most of my Christmas pressies this year, so I need to get a move on:rotfl:The pics are a real inspiration.

    OS forever:)

I'm the kind of person who loves watching shows like the 1940's house and Coal house on tv, I look forward to winter so I can light my coal fire, i can't "settle" on the sofa unless I have a piece of knitting in my hands...
My most out of control OS habit is that I LOVE collecting vintage books and magazines. For the last 20 years I have collected cookery books, domestic guides, medical manuals, educational books etc and over 18 box files of magazines and knitting patterns from Victorian times to 1950's! I seem to be so stuck in the past that whenever I need a recipe or bit of advice I delve into these instead of looking for a modern solution - have I taken it all too far???

Too OS? Never! Dandy-candy, I would love to have a look through your collection, it sounds like a really interesting one, and also I think that you might have something of real financial value (apart from sentimental and interest) - vintage patterns are quite expensive these days, can't even imagine about the value of Victorian ones!

You strike me like a really interesting, warm-hearted and wise person, keep up the good work!

Artydoll, I love your craft pics, thank you for sharing!

    OS is definitely the FUTURE!
Finally I'm an OAP and can travel free (in London at least!).

It's so heartening to read all your posts!:j

I'm really thrilled that there are other people still delving into old books and patterns - I feel a bit more normal now ;) and it is so lovely and interesting to read all your posts and see how you live out your OS lives.

Arty - I love the pics you have posted! You have a real gift with colours, keep up the good work :T

What a lovely thread. I love the OS board and have been trying to live a simpler life since finding it - partly so that I can save more but I have come to really enjoy it and value the simpler things in life. You ladies (and men) are an inspiration and the first place I turn to with a kitchen-related query! :)

p.s. Arty, your pics are beautiful.

  • Wow, Arty, love those pics of all your industry. No, OP carry on being as OS as you wish, it's fab and as Ollie says we have so many aids to help us these days.

I don't have to black lead a yorkshire range every Friday like my mother did, or donkey stone the step, so I can use the time for stretching the meals even further, or making pressies for friends of doing whatever OS thing I choose and I love it. It's OS ways with a modern slant. We can't put the clock back and I don't think any of us really want to as those days were really hard, but we can use the OS principles to make more of today's resources.

Like a few posters here, I also fell into OS because of financial constraints.

I to, also enjoy listening, whilst doing something else.
I am most happy, when there is a good radio programme on, that I can listen to whilst in the kitchen, or weather permitting, be in the garden.
Recently I downloaded a book, for my ipod.... (first time I have had an audio book, and maybe not so OS :o)

I listened to it intently whilst pottering about in the kitchen.
I was incredibly productive, batch cooking, wine making, preserving ect ect, whilst I "read" my book.
I was gutted when it was finished. :(

I dont really do the knitting/fabric thing... well... not yet I dont ;)

    dandy-candy.. cracking thread :T:D
