Islandman's third story. I held back on this as I didn't want to make my post too long. One day, my wife saw a roll of banknotes on the rail in front of her as she slid her shopping basket along to the cashpoint. She handed it in to the store manager who said it would be dealt with.
Little did he realise that I worked for the same company, in a different location. I noted all the details and retained them. I think it was three months later, she approached that store manager and asked what had happened to the money. He said he'd dealt with it and new nothing more.
I then formally approached OUR same managing director and gave him the details of the find. Within an hour, that money was in my hands. I will never know for sure what had happened, but clearly it wasn't something they wanted to discuss with me. Oh, and that store manager, was our local Mayor. Being a pessimist, my guess is that he'd pocketed it and they didn't want adverse publicity.
For the record, it is my understanding that the correct procedure would have been for my wife to inform the store manager of the find, give him her details and tell him it would be handed into the police and do so.This is a system account and does not represent a real person. This thread is fetching back bad memories for me.
I once lost or should I say deprived off.......£826.00 along with my wallet.
This was about 5 years ago.I pulled up drains outside the house and basically tore the house to pieces.
I had just laid new floor boards in the bedroom aswell which also come up.
I still think about it now.0 -

Spotted a wallet on the street, went to pick it up to see if it had any i.d in it and got accused of robbing it a few seconds later...as one of his mates had 'thrown' it out of the window....
The moral of these storys....if its a wallet its 'iffy' ground and if its cash with no one about, its yours(Y)
The guys friends were obviously looking for a fight.. If you throw someones wallet out of the window then you risk it being stolen or being taken somewhere else.
BTW I've found plenty of wallets with bank cards, id and often with money in on nights out. I just post the wallets through the letter box of the bank on one of the bank cards.I'm not cynical I'm realistic

My son found £20 last year on the floor in a shop whilst out with his dad. He told his dad who said put it in your pocket quick - my son couldn't believe his luck. I wish his dad had been more honest and said to hand it in. By the time my son came home from his dads he'd already spent it.2008 Live on £4000 # 119 £249.68/£3836.07 joined 15 Jan

If not claimed within 6 weeks it becomes your property and can be collected from the station. What makes you think you would never see it again?Winnings

My understanding of the law is that if it's a relatively modest amount of money you can keep it as long as you take 'reasonable steps' to find the owner.
I think that means have a bit of a scout around to see if any looks like they're looking for a wallet or whatever. IIRC the limit for that is £50. More than £50 and you should hand it to the police.0 -
I found £40 in the gutter whilst on holiday in Bournemouth about 15 years ago. Looked around for someone who may have lost it, but it was very busy. Kept the money and added it to our holiday spend!!0

You all need to join my thread on..."i challenge you to keep money you find on street"..
I think i put it on Debt free wannabe section, but its doing great..we are all keeping the findings separate until Christmas and seeing who has found the most then!!
obviously if its a wallet/puse with ID then hand it in..but i would never take money to Police again,as you never see it again...i know someone who works at Police Station and kept it themselves!:eek:TO FINISH LAST, FIRST YOU HAVE TO FINISH....0 -

If I find a few quid on the floor in a shop or somewhere... i bung it in a charity box.
I always have done that when people dont want change whan I worked in shops.
Makes me feel good, my life would have benefitted from a few pounds extra. Iam very lucky that way.
If the money was the difference between eating that day or not... i'd keep it... but otherwiseI would rather give it to a good cause.
