I'm having trouble finding any shops that have got out the old xmas cards etc to sell off. The only ones I have seen were in a Cancer Research shop and cost more than I've ever paid for full price ones neway.

What age do we start doing Christmas stockings for our son? He will be 16 months this Xmas, is that too young? I know he won't remember it next year but will he have any concept of it at all or will it be a waste of money this year? Our plan is that pressies in his stocking will be from santa, pressies under the tree will be from family etc. What do you think?

    Cheers;)

I have done stocking since my kids first Christmas. DS was only 5mths but he had a few books and a new toothbrush etc in his stocking. I bought a good stocking for each of them which I hope they will continue to use for years.

This is what we do.....stocking prezzies from Santa and other prezzies are family ones. We've been doing this since we were children and it took a long time before we realised who the santa ones were from:rotfl: We carried on doing this through into adulthood and we all buy a little bit of something to put in each others stockings but don't tag them. My 2 little ones are now 4 yrs and 2 yrs and we've done this since they were born. My mum makes the stockings so we all have our own and she made the little ones theirs for their 1st christmas'. I must admit up until this last year it was probably more for us than them!:o

  • Lillibet, Spud and my DD sound like they were born very close. We got a Father Christmas stocking last for for DD which we just put relatives gifts in but this year I'm going to start to buy little things to put in it. I know she'll be still too young to realise what's going on but it all has to start somewhere :). It's all a bit of fun at the end of the day, one with stacks of memories in years to come.

My sister-in-law started our family on old father time, I'd never heard of it before and the first time she spent new year with us I thought she was mad. Do you put slippers outside the bedroom door or is it just her cause I'm convinced she makes it up as she goes along!:p

We have always done it, it was a tradition from my fathers childhood but most people i know have never heard of it.

We put our boots/shoes/slippers outside out rooms or by the front door, then new years eve Old Father Times fills them with fruit/sweets and some money plus we always got left a tiny gift..............so no its not just her:D

My children have always had a stocking given at their first christmas, even though they all celebrated their first christmas when they where only a few months old. It may seem a waste of time but even at a few months old they enjoy the texture and feel of the stocking and ours have always had bells as well (sound, texture, manipulation, stockings can be great educational tools:D ). On the first christmas we usually filled the stocking with a few little bits like rattles and books and so on. So in my opinion it is never to early.

All of mine have still got their first stocking, though my daughters has needed to be mended a few times as she is almost 14, and i intend to still fill them when they are alot older.

Its one of the things i love most about christmas day, the jingle of the stocking bells as the children come running into our bed on christmas morning, all of us snuggling up whilst they are emptied of their treasure and our bed becomes covered in wrapping paper:D

We also have handmade advent calenders for each of the children which we fill with little treats or pennies, does anyone else do this? I prefer these type of advent calenders rather than ths shop brought chocolate ones as they are more personal and more fun for all of us.

Thanks everyone, have talked to hubby, & Spud will be getting his first Stocking this Xmas then:D Didn't bother last year as he would only have been 4 months old but sounds like we are lagging behind you lot:o Now...any ideas what to put in a 1 year olds stocking? I am thinking a book, HM gingerbread men with his name piped on, a small toy or 2, toothbrush & toothpaste (:p) socks, anything else? Oh, and we plan to put a bell in the toe but you'd need to see Polar Express to understand this:D (which is a very good Xmas film by the way;))

My knitting is still in it's infancy but I plan to have a go at kinitting his Xmas stocking...better get cracking as soon as I have finished my dad's birthday scarf!

    Cheers;)
