Time to speak out on depot refuelling plan
By Jonathan Matfin
Hemel Hempstead residents and workers have just two weeks to have their say on plans by oil giant BP to store fuel again at the disaster-hit Buncefield depot.
Global firm BP, one of five companies at Buncefield, wants a special licence so it can store aviation fuel at the site devastated by a massive explosion and fire in December 2005.
And those who live and work in the town have until January 23 to write to the council with any concerns or questions about the idea.
A spokesman for Dacorum Borough Council said: "(BP] has to go through this consultation before they can submit an application (for a special licence]."
BP must obtain the special licence, or 'hazardous substances consent', from the council before it can store aviation fuel at Buncefield.
The company has already secured standard planning permission for the idea from the council.
Under BP's latest plans, petrol and diesel storage at Buncefield will be 35 per cent lower than storage levels prior to the December 11 disaster.
The space created by the reductio
n will be used for storing aviation fuel, which is less volatile than petrol.
BP spokesman Sheila Williams said: "It's just the way we want to develop the site in the future.
"It goes some way to meeting the concerns of local residents."
BP was granted planning permission for the storage of aviation fuel at Buncefield by the council in November last year.
Permission for work at Buncefield was also granted to Chevron, British Pipeline Agency (BPA) and Total – companies which share the depot with BP and Shell.'
The council aims to restrict the storage of fuel at Buncefield by any company to aviation fuel until the final outcome of investigations into the 2005 disaster are made clear.
Anyone wishing to have their say on BP's plans to store aviation fuel at Buncefield should write to Dacorum Borough Council at The Planning Department, Civic Centre, Hemel Hempstead, HP1 1HH.

Views: I think the planned reopening of the Buncefield site for fuel storage is very wrong. Whilst I believe in the principle of lightening not striking the same place twice, and have no objection to fuel storage itself, I believe it would be an insult to all the victims of the blast for any company to start making a profit from the site before compensation has been paid to the many individuals and businesses who suffered and, in many cases, are still suffering as a result of the blast over two years ago.'

As mentioned earlier in the thread, just wondering whether GMTV could help with MOT's situation.
There is a 'Contact' page at http://www.gm.tv/index.cfm?articleid=678
also contact for various headings -
Depression despair
Debt problems
Are you stressed?
A couple of these didn't seem to work, but if GMTV were interested, it would surely help MOT (and others) who find themselves in similar circumstances.
Good luck MOT, sending best wishes0
