Free Range Chicken

I went into our local Tesco's last week and there was a notice up where the free range chickens usually are that stated that due to demand their supplies had run out and they wouldn't be having any more in until March.
I expect that there will now be a mad rush at the free range farms to fatten up the chickens so that they can be slaughtered as quickly as possible to get them into the Tesco's stores0 -

We've had the same problem at our Tesco's. DH is trying to persuade me to go to our local butchers...I just find it so intimidating in there (how old am I?)
Still, if I do, we might be having rabbit instead of chicken (but don't tell the kids)

Butchers can be quite intimidating with all the choice then they start asking which end you want and confuse you. Buying a chicken should be relatively straightforwards though and as a bonus you can expect to get the giblets in there, I find the neck makes a big difference to stock.0

Unfortunately we no longer have a butchers in my town, or indeed in the next one. The problem is we have a huge tesco and a somerfield in the town centre and a morrisons and a sainsburys both about 4 mins drive away. So what used to be a town of local shops is now just full of banks estate agents takeaways and supermarkets (10 years ago there were 4 butchers just where i live)
The annoying thing is that for the past 3 or four times i have visited tesco they have had no free range chickens or any form of free range chicken at all. There are stacks and stacks of the cheap ones and a few willow farm one. But i rrefuse to pay the money for a willow farm one as they are not free range and in my opinion still cruel. We dont even get the expensive organic ones!!!! So i havent had a chicken for ages.

Hi Sparcia,
As there is a recent discussion on why free range chickens aren't available and where to buy them I've added your thread to that one to keep all the replies together.

The same thing that has happened with the free range chickens will happen after Delia's new programme.
Everyone will rush out to buy whatever she uses as they have 'seen it on the telly' and then there will be shortages.
I find it really interesting to see how much effect media has on peoples lives.'What's poignancy grandad?'

Well, ended up in Asda this morning in the end. 3 free range chickens at 9am, and nothing else chicken based in the free range genre, not a wing leg or thigh to be found, so I bought fish instead lolI think I am going slightly mad.....0
