Free Range Chicken

Yuck, I refuse to buy meat from supermarkets, I just don't trust them.
I get my meat & veg from the local butchers & farmers markets, I only shop from Tesco's for the other stuff like tea bags, toothpaste. If there was somewhere other than a large supermarket I could get these from, I would'nt shop there AT ALL.
I expect it is some ploy to force people into buying those miserable 2 for a fiver chickens again :-((0 -
M&S have their "RSPCA checked" chickens half price ATM. Also, Waitrose have their FR chickens at a third off as I bought 4 the other day in the shopping.

Does RSPCA checked, mean free range, or 'not standing in as much chicken muck as other chickens i've see?'"On behalf of teachers, I'd like to dedicate this award to Michael Gove and I mean dedicate in the Anglo Saxon sense which means insert roughly into the anus of." My hero, Mr Steer.0

Our Tesco sells out really quickly. I've found that I have to go early to get any choice. If I get there too late they only have the really large organic ones left (or the cheapy ones that I don't want).0

That's what I did, as I'd been led to believe that his birds were free range. When he was pressed on the matter, they aren't, so now when we have chicken (which is only occasionally) it's from the supermarket.
Thanks skint cat :T no conspiracy theory, just a case of supply needing to catch up with demand.

I am having the same problem in Tesco's - they never seem to have the free ranges ones in stock.Sealed Pot Challenge #6010

Our Tesco FINALLY had some in the other day. I have bought free range for months as they just taste nicer and aren't pumped full of water like the cheap chicken breasts seem to be. I did also want a whole chicken for a roast but they didn't have any of those.
BUT the end of the row had cheap whole chickens on offer at £1.99 each. Not even 2 for a fiver anymore. They really must be struggling to shift them now and people who don't buy free range are laughing at the moment!
I was annoyed at first when Hugh and Jamie did their highlighting campaign for purely selfish reasons - there were no free range birds for me to buy as they sold out! I have been eating a lot of outdoor reared pork :P! But supply and demand takes a while to filter down and once it does they should also hopefully be a bit cheaper for us! yey!0 -
I only buy my chickens from the local market, living in Manchester means that there is the fab Bury meat and fish market. I get a massive free range chook from there for a fiver.Work like you don't need money,Love like you've never been hurt,And dance like no one's watchingSave the cheerleader, save the world!0

Will see tomorrow morning when on tescos doorstep at 9am, they should have re-stocked overnight. Me I try and get lamb as thats the one creature you cant put in a barn in the dark in their own p**.... unless anyone is going to spoil my gambling sheep image?
I want to think its a shortage due to unexpected demand, but supermarkets are very strong companies that sometimes seem to lack a few ethicsI think I am going slightly mad.....0
