The best bet (if you haven't already done this) is to make sure you empty the toilet bowl of water before using a strong limescale remover, which you leave on for the max time. This works much better than if you use it with water still in the pan.

Best way to remove the water imo, is to pump as much down as possible using a toilet brush, and then use a sponge to soak the rest up (then throw the sponge away!)

It will come off , although you might need to do it more than once.

We used soda crystals or maybe caustic soda and left them overnight to soak off the remainder, make sure you leave a window open tho.

I use every few days a limescale remover toilet gel, not very old style but we have very hard water in our area.

This stuff works very well on kettles:

it says it can be used on WC pans too.

Or, if above the water line, maybe this one:

I second killrock, we have very hard water here so I sympathise. Killrock works wonders. It isn't cheap, but does last, and if you have a "Robert Dyas" near you, you can often get 2 bottles for a better price. Alternatively, I seem to remember that last time I was back home (Lincolnshire) "Boyes" had it in for less than £3.

We had this in our en suite loo, nothing would shift it so there was only one option, rubber gloves, a scourer and bleach, as good as new in 10 minutes of scrubbing, since then I've just bleached everyday and its still as new

Spirits of Salts from a hardware store or builders merchants. You will need gloves and a face mask, but it will remove the limescale.
My Mind wanders, if found please return.

I used barcarbonate of soda and white vinegar, this worked a treat and it was cheap! I took the water out of toilet bowl and put the soda in then added the vinegar. After its fizzed up leave for and hour and hey presto after a bit of elbow grease a nice clean toilet:D

Domestic zero limescale worked for me. Not very oldstyle but after three weeks of emptying the toilet every night to use vinegar, coca cola, sodium bicarb, caustic soda and any other tips I found I gave up and went to tesco. I didn't even remove water from tge toilet, poured a but down mixed it with the brush and left. Lovely sparkly loo two hours later :)

Found this thread last night and three cheers for t'internet.
Cousins "bidie in" has scarpered and left a house like a tip behind her along with a lavatory the likes of which I have never seen before.
I really thought it would need the builders brick cleaner to clean it but I tried the power plus stuff in the black bottle first. Half a bottle and eight hours later the toilet is gleaming:)
Now I need to find a thread about oven cleaning.....
