A very interesting article. I must admit I find it amazing how inactive Ebay/Paypal really are over this kind of thing. I bought what was advertised as a genuine WindowsXP disk and received a fake. I tried to report it and claim back only to find how useless and difficult it is to get action from either Ebay or Paypal. I eventually found he had bought the disk from Ebay a month before for £1.99, and used the exact photo which looked like a real WinXP disk, but completely changed the description which stated it was only a backup CD, saying it was authentic and came with a CAO. What arrived was a copy and a fake certificate. (I won the auction and payed £38 thinking it was genuine).
He refused a refund, so I eventually went to my credit card company I use to pay Paypal and sent them all the evidence. After just a few weeks, I suddenly got a full refund from the guy with no explanation.

I managed to get 2 legit copies of XP for £40 or so each about a year ago. They've passed all Microsoft WGA tests and updates, it's just a matter of being cautious.

Also if you have anyone in your family at school or further education, you can get the Academic versions at a much reduced rate too.

xp retail has never been £300 even when it first came out and even pc world wouldn't charge that much so I have no idea where you came up with that figure.

I really don't get why people buy pen drives of ebay.

I guess people look around for the cheapest and then go and buy it cause there a lot cheaper then the shops.

At the end of the day there's a reason why and you get what you pay for.

Having worked in IT for 18 years and in particular installed, maintained and repaired hundreds of copies of Windows XP I think I know the difference.

But thank you for your well written, constructive reply.

  • I reported a guy to Ebay and the police. He'd 'sold' tyres but...surprise surprise...they didn't turn up. Ebay did berger all but the long slow arm of the law eventually got him a incarcerated (like Blake). Turns out he had more previous than Arthur Daly. The kernt

He still needs reporting, doesn't matter what the crime is they can't be let off the hook to go do it to some other unfortunate person who doesn't know how to fight back.

Would you let off a rapist who said sorry and brought you a bunch of flowers?
