Nice to see this thread resurrected. Be interesting to re cost the recipes from the start of this thread, witht he price hikes we have recently had. Should all be still good low costs though.Good luck to everyone that is struggling to make ends meet. I have just had the first time I came in on the grocery challenge, but now I have seen some of these threads perhaps I can reduce further. When I die I will know that I have lived, loved, mattered and made a difference, even if in a small way.0

I'm bumping this thread as I think it could be very useful to some of us in the coming months.CC2 = £8687.86 ([STRIKE]£10000[/STRIKE] )CC1 = £0 ([STRIKE]£9983[/STRIKE] ); Reusing shopping bags savings =£5.80 vs spent £1.05.Wine is like opera. Here's my latest contribution. Puff pastry pizza.
one pack of puff pastry (29p in Tesco)
tin of tomatoes (19p)
onion (10p)
left over small bits of chicken from roast (guessing 15p)
pinch of herbs (2p)
cornflour (2p)
twist of black pepper (1p?)
cheese (50p)
Roll out pastry as far as it will go (do this on floured surface) and place onto a baking sheet, pinch up the edges (this gives you a crust on your pizza). Open tin of tomatoes and pour away the excess juice. Using a blender wizz up the tomatoes (stir through a little cornflour to thicken) and spread onto pastry. Thinly slice the onion and place on pastry, place on the chicken, sprinkle some herbs, some pepper and grate some cheese and put in the oven at 180C until golden and the cheese is starting to bubble.
Perfect for feeding 6. Total cost (including my guesstimates) 1.28. Alternatively you can place the chicken pieces in a bowl with a dash of olive oil and a tsp of chilli powder and mix together giving you chilli chicken pizza. Or use whatever leftovers you have.CC2 = £8687.86 ([STRIKE]£10000[/STRIKE] )CC1 = £0 ([STRIKE]£9983[/STRIKE] ); Reusing shopping bags savings =£5.80 vs spent £1.05.Wine is like opera. ...of course you meant pour it into a dish, to use for something else, or freeze for future use in bolognaise sauce or whatever...LOL!:rotfl:
Thanks for this - it sounds really nice and a change from my 'bread' pizza bases I usually use.
Does anyone know if ASDA do cheap puff pastry? I don't shop as Tesco's, and have never bought ready-made puff pastry before.
Cheers,

of course I keep the tomato juice!Usually to drink, I love it chilled.
I think Asda still keep cheap puff pastry as well, as years ago before I moved I had an Asda close by but no Tesco and I managed to get it then. Some butchers also sell cheap puff pastry too.CC2 = £8687.86 ([STRIKE]£10000[/STRIKE] )CC1 = £0 ([STRIKE]£9983[/STRIKE] ); Reusing shopping bags savings =£5.80 vs spent £1.05.Wine is like opera. This is a great thread - would love to hear people's suggestions. The only thing is - like someone mentioned earlier - £1.62 would have got you a lot more food when this thread was started than it will now!
I only have to feed three but even doubled, this regular comes under £1.62.
1 bag of sp pasta (19p)
1 tin value plum tomatoes (19p)
100g red lentils (26p)
2 garlic cloves (2p?)
A squirt of ketchup (5p?)
100g sp cheese, grated (21.5p)
While you simmer the tomatoes, lentils, garlic and ketchup for 20 minutes (add enough water when done to thin it out if needed), cook the pasta for 10. Drain pasta and mix with sauce. Transfer to an oven dish and top with cheese. Pop under the grill to melt.
A baguette and broccoli on the side shouldn't break the bank either :TLove and compassion to all x0 -
What about spicy wedges?
Allow one large potato per person and slice into wedges, boil them for 10 minutes then place onto baking tray, brush with a little oil and then sprinkle Season All (use Schwartz's or supermarket own) and bake until they crisp up, serve with ketchup for dipping or sweet chilli sauce
Potatoes (1 large each) 0.80
oil 0.10
Season All 0.10
Ketchup or Sweet Chilli 0.40
total 1.40CC2 = £8687.86 ([STRIKE]£10000[/STRIKE] )CC1 = £0 ([STRIKE]£9983[/STRIKE] ); Reusing shopping bags savings =£5.80 vs spent £1.05.Wine is like opera. You can enjoy it even if you don't understand it and too much can give you a headache the next day J0 -
Ohhh the memories of coming back from holiday and finding the lovely surprise that I had won the competition, with my cheapo pizza!
Our family thoroughly enjoyed the bottle of champagne, I can tell you!
Great thread to resurrect and very inspirational in these times of credit crunch.
Love to all, old and new,
CaterinaFinally I'm an OAP and can travel free (in London at least!).0
