The analogy isn't valid because the main issue with name changes is that the flight could then be easily sold on to someone else for a profit.

It's a fair point so why the big charge aswell if they are making their money from the price increase?

Pure profit, they're there to make money.

Lol, so am I,only trading standards etc actually seem to have some weight as far as small / medium sized businesses go.
I'm really just venting my frustrations with the useless, greedy banks but the airlines decided to scam me aswell on the same day!

It would not be so bad if they used some discretion and common sense. But they don't. they treat every situation exactly the asme regardless of the circumstances. It's a pity they do not adopt this rigid attitude when delays occur. Every delay is their fault regardless!!

When it is clear that a name or gender is wrong on the ticket ,especially where it is a spelling error then they could be more flexible and understanding, especially when it cannot be established whether it is your error or theirs. But no it's always your fault and you must pay again.

Sorry that's not coreect. And remember T&C's are not valid just because you agreed to them. there are the Unfair Terms in Consumer Contract regualtions that you can use to challenge them. But like a lot of similar instances the majority just roll over and have their wallets tickled by these unscrupoulous traders.

Cheap does not mean you can exploit someone and sh*t all over them.

A lot of tickets, like my BA/GB airways tickets, bought via an independant travel agent last summer, dont allow name changes at all, even 2 months notice.
Id have gladly paid an admin fee to have a name change.
We had to buy a complete new ticket and the original passenger was just a "no show"
As the flights were overbooked anyway, it was just "double profit" for BA.

As already mentioned, do your "due dilligence" before you buy. Flexibility costs money. If we opt for the cheapest, inflexible ticket, the just accept the charges to change any detail.
Personally I detest all this "claim back" culture (including bank charges)
We are becoming a nation of whingers, unwilling to accept responsibility for our own mistakes or change of mind
This i totally agree with. I dont understand how people dont expect to be charged for 'late payment' or 'over agreed limit'. when i totally forgot to pay a storecard of mine once I got a £15 charge. I paid and vowed never to forget again. That was 2 years ago and ive kept everything in check ever since! They help you out by giving u credit in the first place... y then argue when YOU forgot to keep to their terms?

Going back to the original point - does anyone know if it is possible to challenge the name change charges under the Unfair Terms in Consumer Contracts Regulations on the grounds that they are unfair and not proportionate to their costs?

With a ticketless airline the correction is made over the phone and takes about 30 seconds. Surely this does not justify a £40 fee. And how on earth can they justify charging you the difference between the price paid for the ticket and the current price? They are not issuing a new ticket to you just amending the existing one. I could understand 1 or the other charge but not both.

Chalenge it if you want.I hope you have deep pockets and dont expect legal aid though.Im sick of my tax going to fund whingers in this sickbed society instead of providing a proper health and education
If you win, just be aware the airlines will just claw it back another way, just as the banks will.We will all end up paying for your name change
The system works for the majority who dont make mistakes or change their mind.
If it aint broke, it doesnt need fixed.
