Hi My Daughters cat has dislocated its hip (he's only 7 months) its going to cost £750 . She lives in Colchester, she isnt working at the moment but her Husband is, they havent a lot of money. She has asked about paying monthly but they have said no. Does anyone know any vets around there who may do op and let them pay over 4 or 5 monthly installments?0

I think you'll get more replies if you post about the cat in the Pet and Petcare section- hopefully some posters may be from that area., otherwise you will have to ring around. Personally I think its pretty mean of your daughter's vet.DONT BREED OR BUY WHILE HOMELESS ANIMALS DIE. GET YOUR ANIMALS NEUTERED TO SAVE LIVES.0

Thanks for that , will do. It would help if she could pay say £150 over 5 months0

If i were you i would tell your daughter to take the cat to a vet,and tell them afterwards that she can only pay in instalments, they will have to accept that then,
I cant believe that vets can be so uncaring when an animal is in pain0 -
Unfortunately my friend is on benefits and that doesn't get you anywhere either. PDAs no go if not in catchment area, local PDAs vets practice won't help if not registered before you require help, RSPCA will only help in a life or death situation, dogs trust only help financially if the problem is only 3 days old, and blue cross r not in our area. So basically all these organisation and charities offer all this help, that no one can get working or not. So what is the charity for??????? To pay the director a bonus for a ****ed up job cos they do sweet ****all for anybody....DISCRACE0

Are you slagging off ALL of the charities that you've listed?
I'm sure that the PDSA would love to financially be in a position to have more clinics, but funds dictate how many it has.
Surely your friend on benefits looked into how she would afford vets bills before she took on the cat? At the end of the day, the cat is HER responsibility, I hope that she didn't take on the cat presuming that Joe Public would give enough to charities to fund her vets bills. I'm afraid there's too many members of Joe Public who simply don't give that much to charity, though I'm sure that this is not the case with you since you are slagging 4 charities off.
ps I do loathe the RSPCA myself, but not because they wont pay my vets bils.DONT BREED OR BUY WHILE HOMELESS ANIMALS DIE. GET YOUR ANIMALS NEUTERED TO SAVE LIVES.0 -
It's true, unless you're on benefits, there seems to be no help to be found with vet bills.
I have a low income but can't claim a penny of benefits etc because I fall through the net at each stage and have taken advice countless times.
I budget extremely carefully for everything but recently had an unexpected vet bill for a small pet but because I wasn't on housing benefit, the PDSA couldn't help. After paying utility bills, Council Tax etc, I have £15pw for food and living expenses. It's not a lot so this vet bill really knocked me. I wish policies would be more flexible and based on income rather than being in receipt of benefits because these can be very hard to obtain.0 -
I was in benefits and always contributed a good amount whilst using Pdsa but now I've just past the line if getting any housing benifit or council tax and now dreading her being unwell as I was only getting £5 towards my rent and that secured Pdsa funding ... Now no better off but no hb so no help I don't get it there should be a cheaper vet help rather than free or donation to extremely unaffordable0

Not quite... I work for Children's Social Care and they definitely don't take children away from people who can't afford to take care of their children... for families who struggle financially, the social services give or lend them food vouchers and money to pay bills, they will put credit on electric/gas key meters and will provide travel warrants or volunteer drivers to take the child to where it needs to go e.g. school or health check ups. They also help them get re-housed to more affordable housing, put them in touch with support networks and will support them as much as possible in order to keep the child with the family. If someone neglects their child enough for SS to remove the child into care, it's generally neglect or abuse because they are bad parents who don't put the child's needs first and cause physical and/or emotional harm, not just because they can't afford to look after the child.
I find it awful that people can't get the help they need towards vet bills to look after their pet if they need it... shouldn't be just for benefit claimaints or certain postcode areas..surely a simple bank statement showing in the ins and outs and balance should be enough to prove they need help0 -
I get £45 pounds a month. £90 if you include the £45 pounds that my boyfriend gets. As we live at home we use most of that money to look after our beloved rabbit, only spending the money on ourselves for what we need. However, when it comes to vet costs we cannot always afford it and we don't claim benefits as we are too young. Also, we cannot get insurance due to being to young. Our rabbit is to present unvaccinated, not microchipped and un neutered as we are saving up to get them done. Because of the rules of these charities we cannot claim from them as we dont recieve benefits (being to young to do so) and we get no help from our parents. i worry about my rabbit every day affraid that he will get sick and i wont be able to afford treatment. yet there are people on benefits that are accepted every day even though they can afford to pay without the help of the charities. they should have different rules for acceptance0
