charities for help with vet bills?

  • It would be difficult I agree but I still think that to only help people who are on benefits is wrong.

You might be on a low wage/pension and a very tight budget, just too much income to be able to claim benefits and you would get no help. Why should claiming benefits automatically give you the right to free treatment for your animal(s)?

I still think that it is the animal that should count, especially with an animal charity.

Not an easy decision to make but I still think that a way could be found, a sliding scale maybe?

If you are on a low income you should still qualify for at least some housing and council tax benefit (my parents did), and therefore you would be eligible to register with the PDSA.

Yes... rehome them or insure them.

I'm sorry but pets are a luxury - not a human right. If they need treatment and you can't afford to provide it then either rehome the pet or have it humanely put down.
I have 2 cats and a dog as well as a human child. I have had all my furs insured from day dot because I knew I couldn't afford huge vet bills - even when money was so tight I was eating noodles and did nothing but go to work (and did overtime to save on heating and power at home...) I still paid my pet insurance.

If you can get help from PDSA or another charity then great but their resources have been seriously pushed to the limit with the increase in applications and unless you are in their catchment area they cannot help.

MRS TINE, I really hope you are never in a position where you are a normal pet owner, in the position that a lot of normal pet owners find themselves in with the job situation being as it is. Your pets will find themselves going from very loved to very dead and buried. You are the kind of person who disgusts me with their comments and should keep your opinions to yourself.
  • the caring has gone out the window i recently had treatment for my dog god rest his soul all the rspca would is pay if the bill was over 40.00 at their discretion unfortunately both times it was under we struggled ive recently got two baby rabbits who will need neutering i know this will be costly unfortunately i cant claim for this on my insurance i am keeping my end of the bargain buy feeding them watering excercise daily cuddles etc insurance i am worried that i may have to give them up because my animals arent recieving treatment they wont help but the neutering is a prevention for futher treatment so where is the sense in not helping me to pay for having them neutered prevention is better then cure i always thought
  • can i point something out. within this thread someione asked about pdsa for neutering. they do NOT do a scheme for neutering pets. they WILL neuter them, but you have to pay . they only do vaccinations if you pay as well at the going rate.
they are there to help SICK animals that need vets treatment whose owners cannot afford, and as already mentioned you need to be on either council tax benefit or housing benefit, both of which i believe you can get for being on a low income.
the RSPCA do neutering vouchers for lowcost neutering, and there is also a section where you can ask for assistance with a vets bill, but its dependant on your branches funds if they can assist with a vets bill.
DOGS TRUST also do neutering vouchers.
there is a scheme running at a lot of vets now where they will cover vaccination for the life of the dog for a one off cost of 99 pounds.

pets are obviously a lifelong commitment, but peoples circumstances do change in ways that cannot be predicted during that time. there are well paid folk out there who dont take pets for treatment when needed, and there are some who will go without themselves to make sure their pets needs are met. i dont agree with criticising anyone who does their utmost to get their pet help regardless of whether its from a charity or not. there is more to petowning than having a healthy income.

    Welcome Alan.

I'd start with the PDSA and see if they operate a clinic in your area.

No one on this thread seems to have mentioned The Blue Cross.

There are 3 animal hospitals in the London area: Hammersmith, Merton & Victoria plus there is some kind of mobile clinic in the east end of London. Also another animal hospital in Grimsby. People need to be on benefit (sorry I don't know specifically which) to qualify for reduced fees treatment.
If you want to know the specifics please contact me as I am an Education Volunteer for the charity

Oh how I agree!!!! Mrs Tine you are obviously in a position we would all love to be in. Myself & my husband had good jobs & always had rescued cats, fully insured I may add, However, a business partner ran off with our money & there was nothing we could do. We now have an IVA which does not allow us to pay pet insurance. So I am sitting here tonight with an injured cat trying to find help. Your words are of no comfort at all. You are entitled to your opinion, but dont be under the illusion that you are so bloody rightious!
