Hi, I have a pet who accidentally got scalded and although very much on the mend now my vet tells me that he will need an operation on the skin to allow him to grow (scar tissue etc). She is pressurising me to hand him over to either cats protection or rspca so that they can pay for the treatment and then rehome him. This isn't what I want as he already has a loving home surely there must be an organisation out there that will take on the cost and allow me to keep my pet.0

It seems a bit like there should be somewhere doesn't it but then so many people would supplement themselves by claiming poverty when they got a vet bill - so society expects us to be able to afford any eventuality with our pets or pay out for insurance
Have you tried PDSA if you are on any benefits?
If not, you could try a small ad in a newspaper for a cat loving benfefactor who may feel like helping out an individual cat - there are such altruistic people out thereYou never know how far-reaching something good, that you may do or say today, may affect the lives of others tomorrow0 -
Goodness me. Its amazing how narrow minded some people can be. Life can change very unexpectedly and dramatically for a huge variety of reasons and this can have catestrophic financial implications. Perhaps it is prudent to bear this in mind before venting black-and-white 'blanket' statements about people unable to afford vet bills and, or, continue with insurance policies that may well have been upkept until circumstance demanded change.0

when it comes to all these insurances. many times i have heard the best policy is to find out the monthly cost of these insruances. and put that money into a regular saver ISA.
imagine it. the £10 life insurance. £10 contents. boiler cover, exceeds £50 a month. a year later thats £600 spent. just look at how much money you are putting into insurances and work out what is the worse case scenario of spending.
watchdog have done reports that many people with pet cover after their first major claim wont have their policy renewed, and no other insurer will take them on due to the fact the pet now has a known condition/illness. so spending 4 year investing in one major claim sometimes does not seem as valuable as just having the money in a savings account.
im not saying not to take out insurances, just to use a calculator and work out what the worse case scenario cost will be vs monthly payment. for instance. AA car relay cover. £50 a year. unless your car has issues its cheaper just to have a close friend to come to you with jump leads or a tow rope and give them some petrol money and a cup of tea for the thanks of helping you out.0 -
and to those talking about aid for people on housing benefit. this is because housing benefit is awarded to those living ON the poverty line. yes many are poor. but the poverty line is much poorer then most. so showing that you claim benefits such as housing benefit shows that your income is of the poorest of the poor. not great for some people. but atleast it helps out the worse of the worse.
and if i had a pet who, if insured would cost a small fortune. i would think what is a reasonable amount per month for pet care, and just save it.
and last note.. £5 a week into a savings account (the price of a single mcdonalds meal) would easily cover medical costs of a 12yo animal. £5x52... x12=_ _ _ _ 4 figures0 -
I am wondering if there is any organisation or charity out there that can help me. I purchased a Pomeranian puppy last Saturday and by the Monday he was rushed to the vet with sickenss and diarrhoea. After 2 days and nights in the vets he has been diagnosed with pneumonia. He had not ate and didnt seem to be getting any better so was transferred to the small animal hospital in Bearsden, Glasgow. he is getting better and is eating but he has a hernia between his heart and stomach which has caused the pneumonia and food is building up around his heart. He is insured for £4000 and this money will run out by this weekend as he is in intensive care. If he makes it through the pneumonia and is fit enough for the operation this is going to take the bill to £6000, me having to find £2000 of my own money baring in mind I have already forked out £2000 for the puppy but I will claim that back through the insurance. I am an animal lover and would hate for the only thing to stop my puppy living and being a happy healthy dog would be the financial cost, I am not looking for the full amount i do not expect this from anyone It is alot of money but he has came this far and made great progress, My local vet said he wouldnt make it 2 days ago and he has improved greatly so any help or advice would be much apprieciated.

i think you would get help if you were on certain benefits, but other than that i don't think so. Ask the vets if you can pay in instalments.0 -
You will have to pay it Im afraid.
If you took him to the PDSA to start with and were in receipt of the qualifying benefits then the treatment would have been a small contribution only.0 -

I'd be knocking the breeders door down for them to pay the cost since they sold me such a sick animal."There is no substitute for time."
Competition wins:
2013. Three bottles of oxygen! And a family ticket to intech science centre. 2011. The Lake District Cheese Co Cow and bunny pop up play tent, cheese voucher, beach ball and cuddly toy cow and bunny and a £20 ToysRus voucher!0 -
Firstly I really hope that your puppy makes a full recovery.
Get on to the breeders- if they are genuine, they should honour the vets bills. Sadly, lots of breeders are in it for the money only, so you wont stand a chance. See if they are Kennel Club registered, if they are , inform them, point out the bad publicity they received ( quite deservedly) in the TV programme highlighting the breeding of dogs with medical conditions, and point out that they now make great claims to have the welfare of the dogs at heart. Find out who advertised the pups and approach them, anything to kick up a fuss, partly for your pup's sake, and also for the sake of any other pups that your breeder may have.
Cant condone you spending £2000 on a pedigree when there's still dogs being put down in pounds, but I do wish your pup well. Sounds extreme, but if it was me, I'd take out a loan. A friend sold her husband's car to pay off her vet's bill.DONT BREED OR BUY WHILE HOMELESS ANIMALS DIE. GET YOUR ANIMALS NEUTERED TO SAVE LIVES.0
