I would bet any money that an individual who had to buy say a £1000 tv from an electrical retailer and was offered either the choice of £30 off or given a DVD player with a listed price of £39 they would opt for the £30 discount. Its fact.

I dont think any genuine good saleperson would ever simply consistently try to always sell the highest valued item...it just doesnt work like that....people who think like that have got it all utterly wrong. If you happen to find yourself in a situation face to face with a salesperson clearly giving you the only option of most expensive as best...then your talking to someone who is clearly new and knows little and should not be trusted....the best thing you can do is ask to move onto another salesperson and try your luck there, let the saleperson hit their own learning curve head on....chances are, they are going to be a 17-22 year old still being educated in some form! You would be doing them a favour by making them think twice when they dont get the smaller sale ending up out of pocket and learning the facts of life & honesty. The world would be a better valued place!!!

Like I said before.....its not real moneysaving really now is it if your out to gain the dvd player only...?

Whether you can afford something or not....just do the right thing....this is just scamming otherwise.

I think that you are being a bit naive here. not to say slightly patronising to Comets and One-tel.

Do you really think that they are not aware of what's going on?

From this offer 'being leaked' they will have increased their sales of telcom packages no end from people being impressed with what they have to offer. The minor cost of a DVD player compares very favourably with the £100 - £150 lead cost.(That is the approx cost of generating leads for their services.

Comet's also don't do bad when these MSEers browse while in the store and purchase other things.

The only loss is to the MSEer in that he loses his integrity but that is soon replaced with the 'Got something for nothing' feeling of pride.

In the past 'conmen' used to set up a suitcase on the pavement of any high street and sell sunglasses claiming "hurry up before the Bill arrives, They're a bit hot", and the members of the public couldn't get their Quids out quick enough.

Same mentallity.

What's more increased No's of DVDs - increased No's of DVD sales and rentals!

if you question the integrity of this then you question the inegirty of martin as he has allowed this discussion on his site which is all about reading terms and getting the best deals - sometimes amazing ones like this one where you are given a dvd player for signing up with no minimum term.

theres nothing wrong with taking advantage of such deals.

there is something wrong with moaning about it though - if you really think its a problem then write to martin@moneysavingexpert.com and tell him not us!

Try and absorb this a little please.....Individual goes in with foreknowledge of SCAM and blatent "intent" to a shop to sign up for a contract, obtain dvd player, cancel contract immediately. In what possible way has the retailer gained from this sequence of steps??

One-Tel wont care about what is going on with rejected contracts and the like as they have simply lost nothing other than a potential new customer. The sting or hit is via the retailer. If they were to change their freebie practice...and they probably will eventually once they realise the losses incurred on this promo....they will end up only giving future promo freebie products following confirmation with contracts having gone through successfully - fair enough thats their fault to sort and are a bit daft to let this happen anyway!!

My simple point is with the morality of what is going on here....its not about me being naive, but is I say again about what is happeneing here - essentially defrauding the retailer through your freebie dvd gaining greed alone!!. Its really really sad and I'm sorry none of you see it that way! Is there no other mse'er with a little sense on here !?!?!!! It is not moneysaving - have some integrity and morals - your blatently dishonestly scamming to gain!!!!

I understand what a loss leader is - perfectly.....but is that what is taking place here when the contract is cancelled the next day? - I think not!!! Would those of you who now have a freebie dvd player at home ever have gone to comet that day for any other major reason? - I doubt it very much.

If any of this was with a financial company - credit cards etc, I'm all up for it since they make a true killing on those who genuinely struggle and say go for it! Retailers, I have a different opinion as they struggle in genuine different ways than those in the vertical market but retailers continue to get slated by the genral public, and yes I am "open" to the fact that often issues do occur and are valid. I'm sure everyone could tell a story about loads of different horror stories ithey encounter...it works both ways.

Dont have a problem, and sorry you see it as "moaning".....just thought I was on a discussion forum, where people may stand up and point out a different opinion !

I've yet to see a genuine opinion from anyone here that could sway me to think that what has happened is a good thing in the whole rich picture of events here!

Well said Rizla. I would like to add to this, Comet give away DVD player to entice customer to sign-up to Onetel probably with the knowledge that some people will take advantage of this, but, regardless they still give the DVD player to who ever. Onetel take custom from BT.

Who is loosing out? Neither. Why? Because as Riz has pointed out this is very good publicity for Comet and I don’t think they care too much whether people do take advantage one way or another. I for one know now where my local Comet is, London Rd, Twickenham, Isleworth off the Chertsey Rd and not far from St. Margaret's. So if a good offer is posted on here again I will know where to find them to purchase it or what ever.

You pointed out that it was Comet and not Onetel who have recently lost profit and I would like to add to this too that Onetel are poaching customers from BT (not in our case mind you). So Onetel have gained also. And if not, how do you know that their profits might plummet because of this.

As for BT, they charge their customers extortionate prices, so are you surprised that Onetel manage to poach customers from them. They may loose a profit but I’m sure it’s only a drop in the ocean for them and if not perhaps they should review their prices to entice their customer back.

I for one have never insulted you for expressing your opinion on this thread. Why do you call us scummy and shallow? Dishonest perhaps, but scummy and shallow I don’t think so. And you can’t assume every ones motives are the same. Our financial circumstances may be a little rocky to say the least.

They have made an error in the way they process things.....simple as that.....like I said, they are daft for allowing this.....it will be corrected given time once they realise they are getting scammed if the numbers are high enough. A failed contract by the way for OneTel has few weeks before it gets returned - so from a store perspective,they dont catch on until its too late and the freebie dvd is not worth recovering by then.

Please re-read my previous posts.....your not understanding...lost dvd products=lost money since they are NOT getting the benefit from the failed contract. All pain, no gain!

Since you wanted the clarity:
dishonest - admitted, (getting somewhere!)
shallow - for walking into a store with blatent intent/motive to scam
scummy - for being driven by greed to do this for self gain

....is no real valid excuse for intent to scam if your really honest with yourself.

Please remember that if they really care they have a right to ask for the DVD Player back as per the T&C's

Unlike most people I have not gone straight for profit, mine is sat in my xmas cupboard, if they havent asked for it back by xmas then someone will get it as a present.

I believe it is 90 days they can ask for the DVD Player back, so if you have sold it you could find yourself having to replace it.

Read in it's entirity I believe most people would be able to understand the reference above.

To clear it up for you, the example above was referring to the way people think and act rather than comparing the offer of the sunglasses with the DVD player offer. I hope that this helps you to understand, Lopo.

Finally Lopo you may feel strongly about this line of thought but clearly your thinking is in the minority here so why trouble yourself to continue to push YOUR point of view to the exclusion of others.

I think that you are fighting a losing battle so why bother?
