Cool! sounds like you have some cool projects on the go! did you buy your fabric on ebay? I was looking on there last night and there is loads of nice floral print fabric. I have soo much dark denim from when I was at university that I don't know what to do with, do you make anything else out of denim? I guess bags are the best thing? Don't think the jewellery rolls will be too hard, going to try and make them simple so I dont make life too hard for myself!

THose are the things I have made so far (see home page;) on profile), I have a list of a few other things I thought of like pan holders, padded worktop saver to put hot pans on, bunting, cushion covers. I have got all my jeans from freecycle or ebay but COOLTRIKERCHICK has a recycling centre and I am going to see her next week - so excited. My other fabric I have had off ebay too, but LA and CK are sooooo expensive.
I was going to have a look in IKEA - what are their fabrics like?

Ikea fabrics are great! They do have some lovely floral fabrics and loads of other styles too andf they are sold by weight, they dont cost much at all. Definitely worth a look.

Cool will check out what you've made :) I am planning on having a very creative weekend! I may try making something out of all that denim I have too - ooh - JUST DISCOVERED LOTTA JANSDOTTER!! seems like there are some really cool little patterns in her book!

I cant get any fabric till monday though when I go into town to the cloth store in Edinburgh which I am told is quite good.

The best one is on South Clerk street at St Patricks Square, I have to be terribly stern with myself in there!

I inherited a sewing machine from my aunt and would love to learn to make clothes (or anything really) but have no real idea how to do it. Can anyone point me in the right direction for a class, tutor, DVD, CD etc???

I am not sure about classes or DVD''s but there are some great simple/how to sew books out there, have a look on Amazon?
  • Hi lyniced

You could ask at a local sewing machine shop if they know of any classes, then there is adult education who run lots of different ones. Plus there are a huge number of sewing related videos on You Tube. The site www.burdastyle.com has free patterns and hints and tips. You could join a Yahoo or Google group about sewing - just do a search on their sites. Plus the library may well have books on the subject.

But my favourite place for books are the charity shops. I got my Readers Digest Complete guide to sewing from one, it is full of all sorts of good stuff( even if the fashions are a tad dated) the principles are the same.

    Good luck

  • Hiya all, enjoying reading all the chat.
Regarding the jewellry rolls, have you tried typing in 'sew a jewellry roll' in google? I just did and came up with some free instructions. Whenever I want something like that I try googling it. I found some excellent bag patterns and instructions that way - be careful though it gets addictive to find the best pattern and you could spend all your valuable sewing time searching for just one more pattern!!
