I'm guessing labour will be a bit more than this, but I was given the cost of the parts and then he said estimate about £300 in total, so that would be £40 labour costs... I think they may have under estimated

Ok, just given in and called the garage......

They are still doing some checks, but my VALVES ARE OK :D They can't say that something else hasn't been broken, but they are going to fit a new tensioner and cam belt and see if that works and then call me back.

    Cost:

    Cam belt - £225.
    Tensioner - £35
    Labour est - £40

Guesstimated about £300, but subject to nothing else being wrong and labour. That's not to bad is it.

But I wouldn't get her back until tomorrow. And they are going to call me once they know for sure.

    A little less panicked now.

£225 seems very excessive for the cost of a cam belt. Inclusive of labour maybe but not just the part.
There are cam belt kits at around £50 Buy it now on ebay. Not Ford original but inclusive of tensioners. Even if a Ford kit was twice as much it's still cheaper than £225.
  • Lucy when we need work done on our cars wellmine and the VW camper - we generally look and try and source the parts ourselves, most mechanics dont mind this and you can find them quite often cheaper. I am with the others, my cam belt went and I did drive it very slowly home and did very little damage at all, cant reminder how much it cost but it was super high. The real pain is the labour.

Just to empathise with you - the suspension on my car went two weeks ago two days before Hubby and I were going to buy a Wii (our xmas present!!) and cost £270 (Citroen hydraulic suspension!) - hey ho.

  • Good luck :T I had the cambelt go on my car, but didn't move it & the engine was fine afterwards.
I agree £225 is quite a lot for the actual part, I think they may have bumped a bit on there, but I suppose it evens out if labour costs are only £40, a friend fitted mine & they are a b*gger to fit apparently!!
Comping again - wins so far : 2 V festival tix, 2 NFL tix, 6 bottles of wine, personalised hand soap, Aussie miracle conditioner

OH flagged this, but he thinks it will include all the labour for it as well, which he said would make the cost about right.
