As for catching them (if you really don't want to kill them) then take a look at this humane trap - http://www.trapman.co.uk/how-to-catch-the-squirrel-in-my-loft.htm - Just remember that there may be more than one so don't celebrate and give up when you catch the first one.

If you catch a grey Squirrel in a trap or even a humane trap you are not allowed to release it, you have to kill it.

Squirrels aren't nocturnal so you should hear them making a lot of noise in the day. They also don't hibernate so you should hear them all winter.

Ideally you need to get rid of them out of where they are before you block up the holes, as otherwise they will gnaw through the material used to come back in or get out due to having very sharp teeth. (Though apparently they hate wire wool.)

If you you have to dispatch of them due to capturing them there are only a few legal ways of doing it at all times of the year - being put to sleep by a vet, sharp blow to the head with heavy object or clean shot.

If you poison them you can only do it at certain times of the year and the poison needs to be put down by a pest controller. If you poison them you risk them hiding some where and dying leaving a horrid smell.
    I'm not cynical I'm realistic :p
