Squirrels in the loft & house! (merged threads)

Girl I used to look after has just been round with her husband......they recently bought lovely country cottage and have now found the loft is occupied by squirrels running amok ! Pest control chap has been out and put some bait down..........they can still here them running about.......he's coming back in the week and says he'll be there for the day and shoot them !
All this is costing her £220 and if they've done any damage to floorboards wiring etc that'l be more money to pay out.
How can she stop this problem happening again.:confused: She's a great lover of wild life, including squirrels, if only they'd stay in her garden not her house.

    DH was in the shower when suddenly a hole appeared in the ceiling followed by a flurry of dried leaves and twigs, followed by a small squirrely face.

    There followed a stopping up of all holes that could admit a squirrel to the loft. DH has showered squirrel free since then.

    The title says it all, was sitting eating my breakfast this morning with the back door open, out of the corner of my eye saw something and to my horror there was a squirrel in the kitchen. The door to the rest of the house was open and it was about to go through, fortunately it changed it's mind and headed for the back door. Which I promptly shut after it had gone. Now I'm frightened to leave the door or windows open. Does anyone know of a good squirrel deterrent. Do the ultra-sonic ones work? I don't have pets but my neighbours do. One I saw on the net says it can be heard by some humans. Any suggestions please. I don't want to have to keep the doors and windows closed now we have some fine weather.
  • Now we had this problem a couple of years ago, all they are doing is looking for food so by leaving them treats outside encourages them to stay outside. If they do enter your house though clap your hands loudly and they should leave immediately (just make sure they are not admiring your fine bone china when you clap) as they move at a pace.

    They are not normally prone to coming into the home though so this should only needed to be done on very rare occasions.

    Buy a .22 air rifle, pick a nice quiet spot in the garden, sit down in a comfy chair and wait for them to cross your path. Aim for the heart, not the head as you will be more likely to get a clean kill. Grey squirrels are destructive vermin so don't feel any guilt about dispatching them. They are also very tasty, so google for recipes.

    A squirrel comes into the house ONCE and the best you can come up with is to kill it??
    Must have taken you an age to think that one up! :rolleyes2

    you may want to check your loft to make sure they are not living in there they sometimes get in under the eaves

    I'm with Mike, even the Forestry Commission says

    The grey squirrel represents a serious and growing threat to our native woodlands and priority species. These threats arise principally through:
    • the stripping of bark leading to the deterioration of trees, reduced income for woodland owners and a reduction in woodland management and associated public benefits;
    • competition with the native red squirrel and spreading the squirrelpox virus;
    • predation of birds nests and competition with endangered species such as the dormouse.
    They are rats with big tails. Unfortunately they are not always easy to kill with a 22 air rifle and careful aiming is needed to despatch them quickly and humanely.

    Okay - first time - give it a good talking to.
    Second time fire over its head as a warning.

    3rd time - shoot the vermin

    It needs no thought at all. I will happily kill any vermin that threaten to destroy property. There is no difference between me doing that and you killing the aphids on your roses or the slugs in your vegetable patch.
