I did this with fish and couldn't scrub the smell out either. I did the bicarb in a bowl thing too, but it did take it to be in there for about a week, so don't give up. It did work in the end.

Mama read so much about the dangers of drinking alcohol and eating chocolate that she immediately gave up reading.

How weird, I did the exact same thing this morning with a scone. It turned into a lump of coal and the entire downstairs filled with black smoke when I opened the microwave door. Even the plate it was on cracked in half, right down the middle. (Scary sometimes to think that I'm paid to cook for a living, if I can't even work a microwave properly!)

I microwaved a couple of lemons and it seems to have helped quite a bit but I'll try the bicarb as well.
  • I use my microwave to cook fish and, though I am happy with the result, the smell of any strong fish, eg smoked haddock and mackerel, does linger in there! I shall try the bicarb tip for that - thanks all!

I second the bicarb and also the lemon. Another Aggie & Kim idea is to put a cup of coffee grains in there for a while - it acts as a deodoriser - I use this for the fridge and it works!

    Hey everyone.

My boyfriend attempted to make poached eggs in the microwave for his breakfast this morning and somehow managed to explode not one, not two, but THREE eggs all over the inside of the microwave! He then used the same cleaning sponge to wipe down the sink and the cooker so my entire kitchen currently stinks like old egg, the microwave worst of all :( Urgh, it's disgusting.

I've tried cleaning it with bleach, lemon, bicarbonate of soda, boiling lemon IN water inside the microwave... what else is left? The only vinegar I have in the house is apple cider vinegar but I don't know if I should give that a go just in case it's a bad idea and I add to the stink. I do have some window cleaning product which includes vinegar... do you think I should try that?

    Help!

Fantastic...Time is probably best. Leave the door open for a while. Leave the lemon and water in there.

    Hi ffotogirl

I agree with HappyMJ, open doors and windows and let as much fresh air in as you can, the smell will clear eventually. You could quicken the process by using the cider vinegar (although ordinary vinegar is cheaper). Put one part vinegar to two parts water in a pan and bring it to the boil on the hob and then leave it to simmer. It really does help neutralise smells.

This thread has more ideas that may help:

I'll add your thread to that one later to keep the suggestions together.

I'd stick with the lemon in water method. Leave it for about 10 minutes, so it gets nice and steamy. Then just wipe down.
