Lemon juice in a dish in saucer, give it 1 or 2 mins on high.
I used to be indecisive but now I am not sure.

chopped lemon and orange in a dish of water, boil on high, not only does it get rid of nasty niffs but it loosens dirt and greese and makes cleaning easy.

i used to do this often in a shared house, very rarely used the micro, but i was aware that everything housemates cooked smelled of custard!! yuk!!

  • Yes definitely lemon in water and nuked on high for a minute or so. Wipe the steam off the inside. Should fix it.
:D Thanks to MSE, I am mortgage free!:D
  • If the lemon isn't working then try some white vinegar in the water too, with or without the lemon, my home ec teacher used to do that at school as there were lots of kids using it every day it could get a bit whiffy!

I do tend to use cillit bang in mine, not for the smell although it seems to sort that too but BF likes to cook baked beans in it without covering them and its the only thing that seems to get the splattered bean juice off the 'ceiling' of the microwave!!

You could try one of those fridge fresh egg shaped things inside it when it's not in use, don't cook it though! I think they are full of bicarb so maybe just a dish of bicarb might work just as well and absorb the smells.
  • Thanks for the tips everyone, I will tackle it again tomorrow and see if I fair any better this time. One thing's for sure, it's put me off ever eating cottage pie!

When not in use I keep an old teacup full of bicarbonate of soda in mine, it keeps it fresh and absorbs any pongy smells.
We must not, in trying to think about how we can make a big difference, ignore the small daily differences we can make which, over time, add up to big differences that we often cannot foresee.

  • Thanks everyone, I've boiled some lemon and vinegar in it and cleaned it out. It's taken the smell away mostly, it just smells a bit of custard now, which is slightly odd! Am off to buy some bicarb now!

    Hi All

Hope you are having a good week.

Help .... please!!! I cooked some fish in my microwave this week and I can't get rid of the smell!!! It's a combined microwave oven and I think there are some splatters in the little holes.

The parts you can get to clean are spotless from being cleaned so many times, and I have tried bicarb of soda - and even vinegar but now my house just smells of pickled fish

Does anyone have any suggestions (apart from cover the fish properly next time :p )

    Thanks

I would stick some washing powder in a bowl, fill the bowl with water and nuke it for 30 seconds. My mum always does this when she's splattered stuff up hers (it's a combination as well). She reckons the steam cleans it and the washing powder helps the smell. cel x
