Stinky microwave!

  • I agree with the lemon/lime thing, really works for me.

Bowl of boiling water, a couple of lemon or lime slices (we keep them in the freezer for instant slices in drinks) and keep dinging it in the microwave for a few minutes wiping out etc every few minutes until stubborn stains and smells have gone.

Once done give it a good drying and leave to air for a bit to make sure it's super-dry before use.

Put it in for 5 mins. Try to use a wide bowl as the steam hits more of the inside. leave for 10 mins to steam inside and repeat.:)

I meant put a whole sliced :olemon in water if smell is bad in wide bowl
In the middle of difficulty lies oppurtunity

Don't know how handy you are with a screwdriver but this might be worth a shot before you write it off.

    Hi everyone

A few months ago, we bought a new microwave and due to me not knowing the correct settings, I accidently burnt a potato to a cinder

Since then, I have tried everything from regularly heating up alternate lemons and white wine vinegar in water and leaving to steam to try and get rid of the smell but it doesn't seem to be working. I even bought some microwave cleaner but no luck. Everytime I open the microwave it still smells strongly of smoke.

Any tips on how to get rid of the smell?

    Thank you!
  • Bicarbonate of soda in a bowl overnight perhaps?! It takes away fridge and bin smells so should maybe do something. No idea though so hopefully someone else will have a definitive answer for you :)

Never tried bicarb soda before! That will be next on my list thanks!

I'm open to as many ideas as people can give to be honest! My partner was not happy to come home to a house and a new microwave that smelled of smoke, the smell in the house eventually faded but I feel bad everytime I open the microwave :(

I was going to suggest bicarb aswell. You could scrub it out with a paste of bicarb and water and then leave a bowl of bicarb inside for as long as you like to absorb the smells.

as well as the bicarb, maybe leave the door open for a while to air it
  • A friend did the same thing and I recommended Bicarb and it work a treat.
