I never measure for a batter - you just need to get the consistency right for whatever you are making. Mix up some plain flour (probably about a cup), an egg and enough milk to get the right consistency. Make sure you don't have lumps by mixing it well! If you want it to puff up a lot, either use self raising flour or add a little baking powder.

4oz flour
1/2 pint milk
1 egg for pancakes or 2 for yorkies.

My mum's batter recipe is:
4 oz plain flour, 1 tsp salt and water to mix a batter of whatever consistency you need. Then mix 1tsp vinegar with 1 tsp of bicarb, add it to the batter and mix. Use right away.
