Malta in April?

My OH and I would like to go to Malta for the last week of April.

Does anyone have any suggestions about where to stay/what to do or where to avoid!

Any deals would be appreciated too. We're not tied but it would be nice to fly from Birmingham on Sat 26th returning Sat 3rd May.

Thanks

Will look to see what deals are available for you.
    Whats your budget?
What board basis would you like?

Would like at least breakfast - self catering would be ok but I would like a break!
Max £275 each - me and OH
No idea on resorts there but I'd like somewhere busy enough with restaurants and bars and near a beach/water - neither of us are into clubs or that sort of thing!

    Thank you

We went there last November and it is not a place I would recommend to anyone under 70 unless you like building sites, rubbish and expensive cheesy tourist attractions.

We gave it a go as we had a really cheap deal (less than £100 for 2 of us for 5 nights, including flights from Luton). I wish we had gone to Cornwall or Devon instead, especially as the weather was not good.

There are a couple of things worth seeing if you are set on it - don't miss St Paul's Catacombs in Rabat, where there is also a very good French restaurant near it, but the name escapes me. The Roman Villa in Gzira is interesting although half of it was destroyed as they couldn't be bothered to re-route a road which was being built through it. (This seemed to us very typical in Malta - much of the archaeological treasures appear to have been bulldozed for a quick buck....)

    Personally I would not bother.

    Gozo looks nice though....

No real advice from me but Malta has just joined the Euro on Jan 1st so prices may have escalated this month on the island.

I would take a look over tripadvisor and holidaytruths websites.

    been a few times

Valletta is worth a visit , Silema more chic ( in comparison to other towns in Malta ) worth a visit or even staying there

St Julians is said to have night life , although not been myself

St Pauls / Qawra / Bugibba / Salina ( really all one resort ) is were I have stayed
has a lot of hotels , but many I would not stay in ... I won't mention them, as believe writs have been issued .

I have gone because I was able to get cheap flights in Summer , and have access to inexpensive but good accomodation (timeshare) , and in the summer , you get the sun, nice pool , bar ... so not sure it matters where you are .. but not my number 1 holiday desination.

I'm not sure if I would go out of season

Some hotels, eateries and even the streets fall down on cleanliness, so be careful

Timeshare still a big thing out there , so be careful

The place does have history, and sights... but depends what you want...

Same here, I went last November as well, I agree 100% with your findings, it is a dump, shame it used to be nice.

Thanks for your comments. Not sure I want to go now! My OH wanted to go so we agreed as I thought it would be warmer than anywhere else! Now I'm a bit stuck. I didn't want to go to the usual suspects like the Canaries, Spain etc so though Malta might offer a few hidden gems.

    !!!!!!! :rotfl:

  • You either love Malta or hate it. I went in January a couple of years ago, absolutely loved it. It is tranquil and historical, no rush and everything is very close.

I've visited malta in mid april, albiet quite some time ago. I'm not sure if it has changed much since I was there. If you are looking for beautiful scenery, give malta a miss. Having said that, I found the locals to be very friendly and that kind of made up for it's shortfalls!

Are you looking for somewhere quiet or lively? the north of the Island tends to be quieter than the south. I stayed in melliah village. Although melliah has a nice beach (you won't find many beaches on the Island) it was too quiet for me and there was nothing to do in the evenings. Buses stop running at around 8pm low season. My friends son lives in st pauls, and that is a much better place to stay for exploring the Island. Buses are frequent and run slightly later than from melliah. In melliah It felt like we were cut off from the rest of the Island. I really did not like this place.

If I ever go back to malta, i'd stay in velleta or silema. HTH
