Malta in April?

We went to Malta / Sliema last month for a weekend. short bus trips cost 53cents per trip - you can buy a day pass for about 3 euro. The tour bus in Sliema does a north and/ or South island tour for 15 Euro - very good value, and you can hop on / off as you wish as they run hourly.
The euro exchange rate means that it costs a bit more for food drink now - but beer is still cheaper than uk + it's a lot warmer weather to drink and people watch. Malta basically closes on Sunday's so suggest you leave the boat trip / other trips to do on a Sunday.
enjoy

Thanks skr sounds great. Will make a note ont he Sunday thing - wasn't sure even the boat trips were running!
Any places you would suggest in Sliema to eat/drink? Or anywhere on the island tour not to miss?0 -
Yes May 1st is Labour Day.Never been over for Labour Day before so asked a relative in Malta and she said there will still be shops/cafes/restaurants etc open in tourist areas."Life is not measured by the breaths we take, but by the moments that take our breath away."0

In Sliema - the best meal we ate was a curry at the Krishna restaurant next to the 'sports' bar type place (traditional Maltese - not). A number of the places seemed very tourist orientated, and I would suggest asking the hotel concierge for recommendations.
We did the Southern Island tour in the morning before we left (independence day so Malta closed again) so did not get off anywhere on that tour. Many of the places it stopped at, given time, we could easily have spent an hour at before the next bus came round - the fishing village, the old ruins, and caves looked interesting.
On the other days we got the local buses to get us about - great fun and regular. One of the group is a twitcher, so we took the bus (the 645 to Gozo from Sliema) up to the (apparently) small nature reserve which is opposite Mellieha bay beach. We also went up to the ferry terminal - Gozo looked easy to do but again we ran out of time.
I put a hotel review on TA along with a few pics of Sliema:

I am visiting Sliema in a couple of weeks, so would be interested to know what you thought of the place.
Does anyone know if you can easily get the bus from the airport to Sliema and what is costs?0 -

Yes - the airport bus takes you to Valleta, then another local bus along to Sliema. Cost was about 50p.
Enjoyed Sliema - very convenient to get to most places, good bus service, and ferry to capital if wanted.:j0 -

Number 8 Bus, change to a 60,62,63,70 or 73 at Valetta of the top of my head (I'm sure there are lots more) Sliema is about 15 mins on the bus from Valetta.
The buses are brilliant, and very cheap. I doubt it would be more than a pound.0 -

I've visited malta in mid april, albiet quite some time ago. I'm not sure if it has changed much since I was there. If you are looking for beautiful scenery, give malta a miss. Having said that, I found the locals to be very friendly and that kind of made up for it's shortfalls!
Are you looking for somewhere quiet or lively? the north of the Island tends to be quieter than the south. I stayed in melliah village. Although melliah has a nice beach (you won't find many beaches on the Island) it was too quiet for me and there was nothing to do in the evenings. Buses stop running at around 8pm low season. My friends son lives in st pauls, and that is a much better place to stay for exploring the Island. Buses are frequent and run slightly later than from melliah. In melliah It felt like we were cut off from the rest of the Island. I really did not like this place.
If I ever go back to malta, i'd stay in velleta or silema. HTH
You obviously have never been to parviville, its an amazing clubbing destination, you can enter at age 16! also gneina bay is the most beautiful beach i have ever seen and it is placed in malta!.0 -
I am part maltese so when I go on holiday there my family know where exactly to take me! at the time I was 16 and was actually able to experience the nightlifee in Paceville. Also the most beautiful beach( gnejna bay ) is placed there. When people say it doesnt look pretty they are obviously staying in the wrong places. Its a small island so it is not hard to get to these places. I stayed in a place called Qawra and it wasnt the prettiest place ive ever been to but once you look around the whole island which only takes about 20 mins to get from one end to the other you will see some beautiful places such as silent city. M'dina . There are scummy places in every country!. dont let it put you off ! malta is a lovely place with real beauty.0
