Problems reformatting PC

I wonder if anyone can help. I have started re formatting my pc but ran into problems.I have done this once before but it was a few years ago and either by good luck or good judgement it went fine......doesnt seem so easy this time!!!

I have reformatted the disk fine. I have then went to insert the drivers and utilities disk and it installs direct x but nothing else. From what I can remember last time this took quite a while to go through last time but today its just not insalling?

Sorry for the stupid question

Okay....what a night I've had....been unable to get on line at all. I have a desktop that operates on XP and it is this I was reformatting. I also have a laptop on vista, attatched wirelessly(sp?).

I have reformatted the desktop, the operating system has been installed. Now the last time I done this( a few years ago) I had to then insert the drivers and utilities disk and it updated them.

I did send off for a new disk to Fujitsu (operating system- recovery cd) as I couldnt find my other one....so im assuming this had been updated with the relevant drivers in my machine as they all seem to be installed and working ( in the systems part of control panel)

Now ive come to install the internet on my desktop and am unable to do it!!

Please can someone talk me through what i have to do. I have, as far as im aware, an internet connection open..( in newtwork connections in the control pannel I have a LAN connected and firewalled...1934 net adapter)

Then when i go to install my talk talk disk to set up the connection, it fails to connect.

The laptop is still connected wirelessly. Router has been re set and is working fine....

Hope that all makes sense and any help gratefully received!!!

has the desktop a network cable ?
Is there a light on the router port for one connected to the pc ?
has it been assigned an ip address ?
Is IE not set to use dial up ? Never dial..

Your talk talk disk may be just for the router - you just need to have a valid ip address for your home network - have a look at the status of the LAN via network connection via settings

I don't have vista but when connecting our two pc's to share the internet we usually have to set up networking on both pc's -it's easy enough in xp but we have done this lots of times, it doesn't seem to "remember" its settings.

I am unable to get the router settings on the desktop but I can on the laptop and they are all okay......ip address etc, password and username...I have contacted Belkin and they have confirmed all details.

As my laptop is connected properly, I must have forgotton to set something up on my laptop. I reformat...put on operating system......then what??

No network is needed needed yet to attatch them as I cannot even get IE...its not even got as far as trying to connect.

Why would the talk talk connection fail to install?

Im tearing my hair out here!!!

You need network first - physical then correct setting b4 IE will work

talk talk/router setting are on the router ! - call/regard the router as a PC on your network that connects to the internet. The tallk tallk disk just sets this up as a one off - it is set up - forget it now - please answer above questions

Your PC needs to be able to talk to the router via the network to get in the internet

    okay.....

There is a cable attatched to the pc to the router and the lights on the router confirm every there is working. One light for power, one for the connection the the desktop, one for wireless working, one to show the phone line is connected and the other to say the internet is working.

My Ip address is set on the router and I have e LAN set up on my desktop.

Is this all correct and all you need to know.

Sorry but this is all a bit above my head so hope im anserwing things correctly!!

yes - okay the physical are in place and working

your pc LAN local area network should be configured to DHCP - not manually assigned IP - the address may well be 192.168.***.*** when this set Is it ?? if it is then open IE pur your gateway address in the address bar 192.168.1.1.. You should see the router configuration page.

Now look at Tools >> Internet Options >> Connections >> set to never Dial >> ok.save.apply the setting to close

That should get you on the internet !
Check the laptop for same setting - so not change the laptop. !
If you have mac filtering etc that another story
