You must be sure you have a good cash reserve before you get into risky stuff or even any S&S. Depends on amounts and circumstances etc but roughly you should have enough cash to live on for at least a year as a minimum without having to sell your S&S, should any income suddenly dry up.
Welllllll, I do have a healthy cash (ISA) reserve which has given me the confidence to try at the 'riskier' end of things, plus, I'm mostly dripfeeding into my (& Mrs Cats) ISA's on a monthly basis.
Its what I'm going to do after April when I'm able to move from Cash Isa to S&S Isa that I'll have to give a lot of considered thought to.0 -
£2400 Fidelity China Focus

Thats a high risk profile but on the other hand they are relatively not huge amounts of money. Obviously i dont know your circumstances but it looks like you really need to build up you cash savings. I would put as much away per month as cash as for S&S.0 -

). Generally the recommendation seems to be 3-6 months for normal situations.

Yes i am not a risk addict. I am more cautious than most in some ways.
Still, it might explain why you can afford to have such a high risk strategy too.I am a Chartered Financial Planner

That is indeed my plan for the next year. I am planning to fill my cash ISA allowance 2008.
Also for more cautious funds, I am thinking of investing into something like the Midas balanced growth fund? and some kind of stewardship fund, and increase these holdings versus the more high risk emerging markets/ china ones.0 -

I guess others can advice you on more cautious funds but it would make sense to me to switch your China, India and Russia funds to Allianz BRIC where the fund manager uses his judgement to allocate to Brazil, Russia, India and China. Allianz BRIC would be slightly lower risk than your China, India and Russia funds.0 -
the fund manager uses his judgement to allocate
............and as we all know Fund Managers are like GODS, geez I even heard of one once who beat his index one year 'In nature, there are neither rewards nor punishments - there are Consequences.'0
