We have had some great holidays in Scotland. Tend to head for Gairloch in Wester Ross. Have been at Easter, in May, August and October (school holidays). I would avoid August, but May is often lovely.

Dundee is quite interesting for a visit. We drive up to Edinburgh or similar (from Surrey). Spend a night somewhere the drive the rest of the way.

Wester Ross is lovely most of the time (except when very wet - like August!) and their are some great beaches, hills to walk in etc. Best of all, hardly anyone seems to go there - certainly very few caravans!
The force is strong in this one!

I've been called a lot worse.... (by you actually in our late night chats :p)

But, one thing is true - Scotland is grim. The people over the years have spent so long hating everything English that they have let their cities fall into absolute disrepair, have one of the highest poverty rates on the British Isles, Highest drink/death rate and highest drug rate, lowest education rate and its always freezing. Ok I admit, there is the odd nice mountain and a bit of history but Scotland imo ranks as one of the worst countries on the planet.

As a Scot I hate to admit it, but yes, many scots actually express strong dislike of English people. I am ashamed of that attitude, having lived also in england for period of 10 years. Friends of mine lived off the west coast for 16 years and have gone back south now, they felt they were never really accepted here. We have a lovely country, the cities are great places. much improved over recent years, lots of culture shopping etc.
tourism is overpriced all over UK, not just Scotland.
I like to holiday in the south, all the Uk has so much to offer. I ignore any anti scot or anti english views!!

PS Perthshire is great place to start!!:j

And with that the days of having an opinion based on experience and then airing it on an open public forum free from insult are gone.

    Bell end ;)

BlondeHeadOn- sorry- CheekyMonkebOy- Go and enjoy. If you don't like what Mr Lahey says what's the worry- I think he must have had a bad experience around the Gorbals. :D

Somehow I doubt you will bump into him there. ;)

Nope, I'm still here - just couldn't believe it when I saw that this old post had popped up again!

As it happened, I decided to go on a boat cruise thing-y around the inner Hebrides instead, which was lovely. No midges at all there...

    :D
  • Phew! Thanks for putting our minds at rest. :)

Seriously though I have had the best/worst times in Scotland. The best being the simply gorgeous scenery in the Highlands and Islands and the diving on wrecks and in lochs and cooking the wonderful Scottish lobster- the worst being post dive in the middle of nowhere freezing my bits off and not a pub for miles!

Glad you had a good time.

I am BSAC Ocean Diver, I lived in Northern Ireland for a few years in Antrim which lies on the shores of Loch Neagh - Amazing diving. Seriously, I have never been on a dive in Scotland, but Loch Neagh remains one of my favourite dive sites in the British Isles (Where i've been)
There are also some fantastic dives in the Lake District or off the coast of Northumberland (Farne Islands - A few good wrecks)

Still, if you want clear seas and marine life then its the South Coast, Weymouth etc....

There you go..... You need never have to put up with Scotland again :D
