A couple of years ago I used to work on the bread and cake section at sainsburys and often did resuctions.
I can echo what wirm said about some people. I used to call some of them Scavengers. Some poeple were even rude enough to march up to me when I was reducing stuff and demand that I reduce it, or increase the reduction. The answer was always No, or to reduce by 2p or a further 2p.
Some customers can be extremly rude and offensive, especially where reductions are concerned.
Then there were people (I would hope that you fall into this category M.E.2) who were perfectly reasonable and friendly who you got to know. People like that often got good/extra reductions, etc If i was asked micely if something was likely to be reduced, and I was going to do it later, I would do it for them, or sometimes ask how much they wanted it for!
It's all down to the 'do unto others what you want them to do to you' saying. You be nice to the person doing reductions and they will be nice. Be rude and nasty, and quite simply, no bargins for you.0 -

safesound wrote:I can verify this, when I worked for Iceland I used to reduce stuff first thing in the morning. I'd take about a fifth off of the price if it was tomorrows date and half if it was todays. Bloody annoying to have to keep going back to the things you did yesterday but luckily we were allowed to buy the reduced stuff ourselves so anything that I could use went into the back cooler.
Yep -we reduce by 30% a couple of days before and 50% or more on the sell by date. I'm lucky as I work first thing in the mornings. Not only are we allowed to buy the reduced stuff but we get staff discount on it as well. Came home today with 2 Warburtons Toastie loaves for 30p each, 2 cakes for 50p, and a big bag of Warburtons tea cakes for 30p. All goes in freezer and lasts the week. Love getting things reduced!!!:money:Accepted offer on our house - Sept 2006

I am not surprised that you need security with you if that is your attitude. I am more surprised that you have the job.
I have rep[orted this post but no action was taken.
I just cannot believe what I read in this post!
I saw nothing wrong in wirms post whatsoever.

The day before a bank holiday is always a good one to go for, as is the day after anything like easter, mothers' day, fathers' day, big sporting events (co-op facepaint 50p after last years footy!)
I have a problem with people like the woman who put ALL the reduced price meat into her basket, or the elderly ladies in Tescos who were using an arrangement of trolley/shopping trolley and zimmer frame to keep others away from the discounted goods.Member no.1 of the 'I'm not in a clique' group :rotfl:

i work the night shift at tesco stacking the shelves on the grocery section.. if i find dented tins or damaged packaging or items going out of date within the next week or so i have to take them off the shelf and leave them at the end of the aisle for the "waste and reductions" guy to collect. (waste is open packages and stuff thats damanged beyond saleablilty) He does all the reductionsfor our dept in time for the store opening at 7am. If he doesnt have time they get left for the day staff to do later but usually they are on the "reduced trolley" at 7am.

Tesco fresh food reductions should(!) be done 3 times a day. The 1st reduction gets done the night before, when there are high volumes of stock, or where they are slow selling lines. The next reduction gets done at 12 noon, this includes lesser volumes and some faster selling lines. The next reduction gets done at 5pm, which reviews the stock levels of the previous reduction lines and looks at faster selling lines/ more desirables e.g. pizza, cream cakes. During the course of the day, ususally in the evening, someone will complete a "full sweep", so check the whole dept for todays date lines and reduce them appropriately. You get to know what customers in your area are prepared to pay.
I totally agree with posts about unsavory customers. We all enjoy a bargain... that's why were here! However there are too many people who believe that its their right to have products reduced for them. They can be so arrogant and aggressive and the worst part is, many of them have more than enough money to buy full price items, where as not everyone has that luxury. I have had to dive in and defend members of staff from customers who have literally chased them with their trolley. Its like having stalkers!0 -
I work in sainsburys and i find that certain religious people take all the best stuff and leave whats left for normal folk, these religious people have a habit of asking me if i can reduce this any more or that anymore, i tell em no i wont be reducing it anymore, theyre scavangersNo Links in Signature by site rules - MSE Forum Team 20

i have worked in one of the big supermarkets and have seen first hand the fighting for a leg of pork or a joint of beef and what amazes me is that you would think the people that are fighting over this stuff are people with not a lot of money anyway, but you would be mistaken, the well to do people that walk around thinking they are better than everyone are the worst,

we normally do our shopping bout 4ish - after i finish work but i thought id pop down to local tescos today after 2 to c wot bargains were to be had!
anyway i couldnt believe the scene. people pulling boxes out of the sales asistants hands as soon as shed stuck the reduced sticker on and the same ones just filling up their trollies! i mean im not against them but at least be civilised about it. wait till theyve put it out and allows us all to have an equal chance of getting somethings. manage to pick up some brownies, 2 loaves of bread and a box of croissants.but it was very busy, even the parking queues were horrendous, right outside tescos!0
