I used to work for safeway, reducing stuff:
* 30% reduction on any fresh foods/bakery the night before its sell-by date
on the day of the sell-by date:
* 50% reduction at 4pm
* whatever doesnt sell then was reduced around about 7 (the hour before we closed) to about 75%
* items that we considered difficult to sell could be reduced down to 10p if needed (i.e. prune flavoured organic yoghurts, teletubbies youghurts )
All prices + times varied because it was utilmatly up to me how much i would reduce things, however these were the guidelines i would stick to if i didn't want to get in trouble with the boss.
To be honest there was very rarely any real bargains worth having in the reductions area (often the length of time availible to eat the goods outweighs the reduction IMHO and the meat we reduced looked vile) the only exceptions being when we ordered too much stock in, i.e. mince pies and some clown put out the ones with a longer date on first so i had to reduce about 6 cases i found in the back of mr kipling 6 mince pies to 20p.0 -
Totally different in the Tesco I work mute. I start at 6.30ish and straight away I reduce everything by 80%. Some things are reduced at about 11am on that day by about 50%. Come 9pm (Store closes at 10pm) I reduce everything to under 20p
I've sold steaks, chickens, roasts etc at 10p all the time.
Sadly I can't buy anything though that I reduce!

starlite wrote:why reduce in the morning? surely people will buy it anway..though personally if i see the sell by date for meat etc is the same day i look for more fresh stuff or feel disgruntled that it wasn't reduced
what really annoys me in our sainsburys though, is if say a whole chicken is on half price offer, you wil see someone with a trolley full..probably businesses who find it easier/cheaper than buying wholesale
Apparantely, its because when they reduce in the evening, they dont reduce by much, so this gives them more scope for profit...Then in the morning they reduce it so they get a quick sell!In this trusted place U can erase
Every tear that ever rolled down your weary face
All the time U waste in that paper chase
Is time better spent in these arms of mine0 -
My local Sainsburys over the last 2 wks, have gone potty!
Any time of day they used to have reductions, but now they have been told to only reduce ANYTHING by 10%, no matter what time of/or day it is!!!!
When I asked the store manager why, was told to stop people taking advantage of it and to make them buy their 'Proper' stuff. !!!!!!????
The lady who reduces it, said they'd told her to 'throw it away', rather than 'Let them have it'
Oh dear! I don't think it was becasue of me joining this forum either, as I've been maxing out Tesco online and Boots.................

i work in asda and they reduced the veg about 6.30 -7 depending on how much they have. there is a really nice 10p man and he just does anthing no matter what the original price to 10p flowers £5 down to 10p . he is my best friend and i love him. if i am at work he comes and askes me what i want and he puts in the customer services fridge until i finish. the veg lasts pretty well pertically the organic cauli.Smile and be happy, things can usually get worse!0

I'm an "urbanite" from Derby who would love to live in a small village but can't afford to. Due to my financial circumstances and 2 young children a lot of my food shopping is reductions which I can freeze. I prefer to think of us as moneysavers - just what this forum is all about. Why pay full prices for items when you know you can buy them 80% cheaper.0 -
hell yes! just what i think..which ios why i am asking for times to go into supermarkets and guarantee the bargains..expecially as we only have a sainsburys close to us, which is so overpriced normally but tend to habe great offers, and amazing clearance reductions..ie last week i got four bunches of asparagus at 10p each(and we love it so made half with dinner and the rest into freezable soup) and also 5 huge rump steaks at 65p each!can't be beatenstressedoutmum wrote:blueP

The only excuse I give when buying reduced stuff (which is a lot of the time) is that everything I buy will either get eaten in time, or can be frozen. I'm not proud. I'll happily buy from the reduce shelf without feeling bad about it. It's a bit different when my OH comes home with 20 different sandwiches because they were reduced down to 10p each!In a rut? Can't get out? Don't know why?
It's time to make that change.
