Spare a thought for us Deaf people who won't be able to use it.. as not one carry subtitles!!
Some programmes have their signed repeats available through iPlayer. See What signed programmes are available? I do appreciated that being deaf does not mean being able to sign.

Oh that's a shame they don't use subtitles! The issue should be raised with them and it seems so silly not to do that :(
I'm sure you can get subtitles on the download version of the BBC iPlayer. They just don't offer them on the streamed version…
The BBC did attempt to get subtitles working. See iPlayer: A Deaf Perspective. They were trying to provide subtitles within Microsoft’s Media Player. Unfortunately, the system was seriously broken, never really worked reliably and so it was withdrawn. Given how amazingly quickly got the new Flashed-based streaming player up and running, they may be able to get subtitles working in that, fairly quickly.
Anyone worked out how to convert the downloaded program to avi or divx to store up for a later date?
As other’s have said, that would mean stripping away the digital rights management (DRM) protection. That would be illegal. While, you wouldn’t be surprised to learn that it’s possible, and, despite what others have said, will leave you with a file that is in every other way identical to the protected file, I also don’t think you’d be surprised to hear me say that we’re not allowed to tell you how to do it, on this forum.

Trying to pin down someone’s physical location using their Internet address is inherently problematic. Internet addresses were never intended to give you a physical location. See the section I'm in the United Kingdom but told that I'm not, on the iPlayer Can I download programmes from outside the UK? page. This basically says that if their database that tries to match Internet addresses to physical locations is wrong, tough, it’s your ISP’s fault.

if you download the programe can you take as long as you want to watch it?

With the BBC iPlayer, when you download a programe you have 30 days to watch it. Once you watch it, you only have it for 7 days!

Downloading can take some time to complete. I downloaded Still Game Hogmaney Special that is 30 mins long, but it took nearly an hour to complete the download!!!!!

ITV Catch Up have the shows online to watch for 30 days. But as well as the recent shows, they have some "oldies" like Metal Micky!!!

Yes there was a subtitles of the download version but it only worked for 2 weeks and it stopped!

tecnical limitation of flash.. then why use flash? icon9.gif

Well the main reason for using Flash is that it works on pretty much every operating system. There's not really many other options they could go for only really RealPlayer or Microsoft Silverlight and I'm not sure if either of them can handle subtitles either.

It would be possible to have subtitles if they BBC hosted another version of the video which just had the subtitles already in place then they wouldn't need to be overlaid by the software at the user end.

Are you just getting the grey screen?

I checked their FAQs and followed their guidelines for deleting cookies, history etc - then ended up having to turn off ad-blocking and pop-ups on my Norton - don't know which bit sorted it but the button appeared afterwards.
