    Thank you.

Patience exhausted with Barclays and have successfully applied for a Lloyds Ultra credit card. Application process dead simple and approval granted immediately. Can't ask for more than that.

Well, I don't have Excel. I didn't find an option like that in LibreOffice Calc, which is the spreadsheet I use.

I tried copying and pasting from the PDF into a spreadsheet. It put all the fields into a single column. I guess a macro could be written to rearrange them across the page. Quite fiddly though, and the copy-paste is an amount of manual interaction.

  • Thanks for this - the issue for me seems to be specifically that Mac + Safari doesn't download the files in CSV format. I just tried with Mac + Chrome and I could download monthly statements and transactions in CSV. I haven't yet checked the formatting in the CSV files!

I've posted about this a few weeks ago.

The CSV option is dead for me - the data is broken, and the ability to download all transactions since last statement has effectively gone.

For transaction download, I'm going to do a periodic copy and paste of the transaction screen into a text file, which I will then interpret into OFX. This has correct dates and sufficient information to populate the OFX file (if I hard code the account number and forget about the account balance).

For me Barclaycard are on borrowed time - the card is being retained because it pays better cashback (0.5% than the default 0.25% on Lloyds Ultra). If the Ultra "normal" rate becomes a permanent 0.5% or 1% (unlikely), Barclaycard is toast.

For the record, the I delayed getting the Lloyds card until I had some foreign trips+large spend coming up, the timing was fortuitous - the only transactions I haven't been able to upload into Money since the effective switch off have been the last payment and the last cashback credit.

As a more general comment, Barclays IT does my head in, seems to be run by a bunch of people who like getting paid to do a job and don't care whether what they achieve is good, or actually works in practice. Put another way, there's poor specification of deliverables before coding, zero verification afterwards, and a "we've pulled the functionality, hard cheese, here's £25" attitude when customers complain.

Update from me is that I now have a program that works well enough for my own use. It generates CSV files of transactions directly from Barclaycard's statement PDF files.

It's written in Python and makes use of an existing PDF module.

I'll publish it as Open Source … after improving the code structure.

  • My workaround is to export my Barclaycard PDF statement as text using Okular, then paste appropriate parts of the text file into Excel, and use Excel formulas to parse the text into appropriate columns. I would be interested in trying out your python programme.

Relating to this issue, when I exported a CSV from the Barclay website today, very usefully, it didn't include any of the spending by my partner on our second card linked to my account (as her card has a different number to mine). I can only assume that Barclay programmers live on the planet zog.

    I'm investigating alternative credit cards.

Having looked at Python and Okular, I'm afraid with the best will in the world, I just can't see me ever using this card again as my main credit card. May use it for the odd large transaction to utilise the existing credit limit but the days of 3 pages of transactions are definitely now a thing of the past for me.

I might give AI a try just out of interest when I have a moment or two to spare but it does seem a backward stel by Barclaycard to disable such a useful function.

They don't do these things on a whim, someone will have worked out the cost of losing customers who will leave because they can't download transaction data versus cost of maintaining (niche) functionality.

I'd guess that downloaders are unlikely to be the customers who use their cards to borrow and so will be least missed (when judged solely on card profitability).
