How much needs to be spent for a noticeable PC upgrade & would it be worth it?

Only used MakeMKV for DVD's and it did not take long on an Ryzen 5 3600 system which is the only one we have
with a drive. Old ASUS DVDRW which claims to be 24X but it's nowhere near.
Just ran a DVD through MakeMKV 6.85GB it took just under 8 minutes direct from DVD to an old drive not an SSD.
Showed a read speed approx 10X to 11X but the final screen was just 7.9X and 10.4M/s.
Video was 1h56m long.
How does that compare to your system? Or I can run a 'MKVToolNix GUI' but thats super fast on my system.Censorship Reigns Supreme in Troll City...0 -
MakeMKV isn't the same process as Handbrake, all it does is copy the contents of a disk to an ISO / MKV file.. Its speed is more about how fast your drive can process the data and your disk can write it (and what you choose to take from the disc).
Drive x24/x52 speed is a misnomer, what that figure actually means is for CDs is 150kb/s, and for DVDs about 1.3Mb/s on a x1, so 52x 150kb/s x52 is 7.8Mb/s a minute and a 16x DVD-Rom would be 21Mb/s. These are theoretical maximum speeds, you get the faster speeds by the data being on the edge of the disc, spinning slower as you move in.
Handbrake is a video transcoder that works across the whole file (from MakeMKV or otherwise). Working on a per frame basis it will always take significantly longer than MakeMKV and is more CPU/GPU intensive than MakeMKV.0 -
May I suggest that apart from handbrake, which OP no longer use there is little point in upgrading :-)

I can't answer your question as I don't rip DVDs. Only blu rays.
I don't?
That's like saying I no longer use my car because I've not been out in it today & probably wont be tomorrow either. I'll be using it on Monday though.

There are plenty of used/reconditioned Lenovo 'Tiny PCs' on ebay, which would do more than you need, for £3300 ish. I have not bought one, but seen good reports, and if I was looking for another PC I would certainly give those consideration.

I hope that's a typo as OP doesn't want to spend over three grand on an upgrade.

More like saying. I want to buy a faster car, just because I can :-)

Right now - nothing.
Later on - something. 😊
