Just spent a long time applying for the Barclaycard Platinum Card for balance transfer, on three occasions without success. Right at the end of the application when I was waiting for their response, I was given an apology and told there was a problem and to contact customer service. Inbetween attempts, I phoned customer service who explained it was an online only application and to retry. After the third attempt, I sent them a complaint and applied instead for a Virgin card which was successful first time. Has anyone else experienced such a problem with Barclaycard?
  • Also, please can anyone tell me if it is OK to transfer a credit card balance on to my new Virgin card from my partner's credit card? On advice from this website, she called Capital One today to ask for a consideration re. her credit card interest rate which is 29.6%! The operator refused saying it is not something they do. She replied 'not even to keep a customer?' The operator said they do not do this and suggested she try elsewhere. Thought people might like to know this. Jimmy

But remember - the debt will become legally yours once it's transferred, regardless of what happens to your relationship.

Are you a secondary cardholder on the account?

I transferred my mums' Cap1 balance to my barclaycard without any problems (I did it online, much easier)

Doesn't surprise me that they wouldn't reduce the APR tbh :(

  • Thanks Louise. The Capital One card is in her name only. I'd like to pay it off for her at this opportunity if possible. The Virgin website asks for account number and balance to be transferred, not the name on the account.

It shouldn't be a problem, we've done it on a couple of occassions transferring from one named account to another with no problem (and we don't have joint cards in the accounts).

Well if you're doing it online you may as well give it a go -you will know as soon as you try and send the details if they are going to accept it or not :)

  • Clydesdale and Yorkshire bank appear to have dropped the existing customer only bit on the gold mastercard.
I have a deep burning indifference
  • I have just successfully applied for a Halifax Credit Card with the 22 months interest free on balance transfers. Quick question, how many times can you balance transfer from the same card?

The reason I ask is I had hoped to balance transfer my overdraft but only realised after applying that I can't transfer the balance from an existing Halifax product (I know, schoolboy error!) but would be able to put roughly half the overdraft on my existing (Egg) credit card before transferring the balance to my new Halifax card. This would leave me with the clear Egg card which I could then put the remainder of the overdraft on, before balance transferring again.

The theory works in my head like so:

Egg Balance: £550 of £1000 Limit
    Overdraft: £1000
    New Halifax Card Limit: £1850

Transfer £400 of overdraft to Egg Card, then balance transfer entire Egg card balance onto Halifax Card. Transfer remaining £600 Overdraft onto Egg card, then balance transfer again, leaving my new card with a balance of £1550 (plus any fees) at 22 months interest free.

Can it be as simple as that??! Any advice/suggestions from the more knowledgable of you out there would be much appreciated.

Hi all, any suggestions as to which is the best comparison site where along with the chances of gaining the card for transfer, the results also give the criteria as to transferable amount and minimum income etc?. Simply put we dont want to go via dodgy joes comparparison site, just the better comparison site\s that give as much of the minimum criteria details as possable?.
