Hose pipe bans

I seem to remember it's ok to fill your water butt with a hose even during a ban on hosepipes. The logic being, you're not wasting any of the water that way, you will fill your watering can from the water butt, that's the same as filling it from the tap

I have to take water to my horses every day now my spring has dried up so I'm exempt but only to use for that specific purpose

Because on a purely personal level, if water is getting that low I don’t want to add to more needing to be extracted from rivers with the subsequent impact on wildlife.

AW restrictions although you do need to meet certain criteria

You can continue to water gardens and grow fruit and vegetables using a watering can, bucket, water from a water butt or a drip or trickle irrigation system if:

• it is fitted with a timer
• it is fitted with a pressure reducing valve
• it is not handheld
• it delivers water directly to the soil or plant roots

I love hose pipe bans. We get the blue badge holder to water the large front garden with a hose just to upset the locals who can't do the same. 😁😁

Our town has smart water meters installed by mandate. It would be trivially easy to link household data, households with exemptions and water usage to investigate "excessive" water usage that could be used for evidence and enforcement.

Meanwhile in the same town, I walked past a water leak. Let's see how long it takes before the company implementing a "temporary use ban" fix it.

My neighbours' kids are merrily playing in what looks like a freshly filled paddling pool this afternoon. I've finally got round to setting up a waterbutt. It's somewhere on my top ten of most hated DIY jobs, and this one went as well as it usually does.

This reminds me, my MIL used to tell me how when her children (including my OH) were small, she used to carry downstairs from their flat, kettles of hot water into the kids paddling pool to warm it up! I was astonished, no such molly-koddling in our house. Cold water from the tap via the hose and we got on with it. Didn't help that our garden sloped so the pool depth varied one side to the other.

My water company is not as specific as that hence my question to try and resolve the ambiguity.
