Paying tax after self assessment calculation
When paying additional tax after self assessment direct to HMRC can you pay a small initial amount just to check the acount details have been entered correctly. That way if there's an error, it's only a small amount.
Then send the balance owed.
I normally do this for any new BACS payment for my own peace of mind and security.
Thanks

Why not pay by debit card or open banking (which they call "Approve a payment through your online bank account")?

@sausage_time's suggestion is the way to go, set it up through open banking and select a date that suits you.
With Nationwide it appears as a future payment instantly and of course the account details come from HMRC.0 -
do you not trust the source of where you got the account details from in the first place?
using them is simply down to you checking you entered the digits correctly0 -
Which bank is it that has a set of "pre-programmed" payees for things like HMRC, popular utilities etc?
Remember some paranoid comments that this was the first step towards The Government snooping on all our bank accounts.

OP Yes you can pay the tax due in instalments; you don't have to pay it all in one go or all from the same account. Just be aware that it takes a few days for the amount you pay to show up in your personal tax account so if you have a deadline for paying it all (like 31 July) then don't leave the first payment until 30 July and expect to see it appear that same day.

On account details you may be told to pay Shipley or Cumbernauld. I find it doesn't actually make any difference. What is important is putting your reference on the payment (and getting it right).

If you arrange it by open banking all those details are auto-populated, simple.

So far I have managed to avoid open banking. The only time someone tried to get me to use it I was delighted to find that my bank (actually a building society) wasn't on their list.

I did not say anything at all about pre programmed payees or paranoia.
OP refers to "check the acount details have been entered correctly" which to me implies manual entry by the OP from some form of source info, the obvious being the government website!.Pay your Self Assessment tax bill: Make an online or telephone bank transfer - GOV.UK
However, as others have pointed out, pre programmed payees are indeed offered by some banks, but can be manually checked nonetheless (if you look hard enough)
