I'd have thought an actual puncture would be quite rare these days, with the advent of tyre pressure monitoring systems. You usually get ample indication that a tyre is starting to deflate.

If i did come out to a flat tyre i'd use the electric compressor i carry to blow it up to get me either home or to a tyre shop.

Thats been my approach this last 20 years or so. Most of our recent ICE cars didnt have spares anyway. Not an EV thing.

TPMS can alert you when a puncture has occurred. However, it cannot prevent punctures.

    Indeed.

However "back in the day" chances are the first you knew that you had an actual puncture was when you went out and your wheel was flat. TPMS will let you know as soon as it sees a pressure drop. This could be some considerable amount of time before the tyre has actually deflated.

I think on my wifes Z4 it'll give a warning when theres a 2lb of pressure drop. Thus giving us plenty of time to resolve it.

As i said i cant remember the last time i came out to an absolutely flat wheel that would have required changing a wheel. Not saying it doesnt happen but its a lot rarer for most people than it used to be.

I've had, I think, three in the last five years.

One was a sharp edge of tarmac when meeting an oncoming vehicle on a narrow lane. Total deflation by the time I got the mile home.

One was a sharp bit of metal debris I simply never saw while in slow moving traffic. Tick, tick, tick, squelchtick, squelchtick was the first I knew. Total deflation by the time I got to a safe place to park and change it half a mile away. The sharp metal shard (prob 5cm x 5cm x 5mm thick) was sticking out of the sidewall.

The third was misjudging the sharp stone edge of a low wall swinging wide to turn round in a mate's drive. Instant total deflation.

So, yeh… Shall we call it roughly 50% own fault?

Geez, thats a lot of bad luck there :(

Would be worth carrying a spare in your boot, if you dont do so already.

Even going back over the last 20 years, i think i've maybe had one where i actually have had to change the wheel at the roadside.

That time covers several years doing 30,000 miles a year, and also back to my time motor trading, when i was maybe jumping in and out of and driving maybe 20+ cars a month.

Probably a slow puncture every other year or so on average, caught either by TPMS or noting the wheel was soft and blown up with a electric pump.

Doing a quick poll over on Pistonheads, early doors yet, but a early responses show nearly half of people havent had a roadside puncture / blowout necessitating a change of wheel.

However of the rest it goes from 2, 3, 4 to 5+ (the highest poll option i set).

Interesting. I'd have said it was rare, but your experience and the poll is showing otherwise.

I'll come back with the results after a few days with a more meaningful sample size
