We had similar. Always had a slpare. If not supplied bought one.
Hit a deep, sharp edged pothole on a single track road and burst two tyres.
Had to wait an hour for breakdown truck to tie us back to our local garage .
As we passed our house on the way he dropped myself and the dogs off, took the car to the garage and dropped myself husband off at the house on the way back.
The driver also stopped for a conversation with a friend on the way.

The manufacturer breakdown cover may be a rebadged AA / RAC cover with its own phone number, but they go a bit further than that.
I had an issue with my car alarm and was given an appointment about 3 weeks away by the main dealer for a warranty repair. When I moaned about the timescale, they told me if it was creating a nuisance to call the manufacturers breakdown service, it would be recovered to the dealer, and would jump the queue on the say of the breakdown service.
The 3 years includes European cover.

That sounds like exactly what BMW and several others offer, if you are more than 50/ 60 miles from a franchised dealership.

When I called Volvo Assistance a Volvo man came in a Volvo sign-written van and sorted me out.
Tall, dark & handsome. Well two out of three ain't bad.0 -
meanwhile someone with a genuine breakdown is stuck at the side of the road whilst someone with no breakdown plays the system.

That's not playing the system. That's using the system as the manufacturer specified it from whoever they bought it from.
It's described as roadside assistance, not as breakdown cover.

often there is nowhere to put it other than the boot and on longer trips the boot may be packed. my car has bigish tyres 265 45 40 - try carrying a skinny spare and sticking that in the boot with just one suitcase
