I know 😭 I’ll report back after my appointment - I am hoping it covers the whole cost of it. If it doesn’t I’m going to query it.

  • To anyone reading this: what was the number you got to while paying off your mortgage when you thought ‘wow I’m really making a difference here’?

I was thinking today about when I would finally feel like I’ve actually made progress. And I feel like maybe when there’s 50k left on it, I would feel it. Maybe 40k. Somewhere between the two.

I think it probably depends on your starting point. For me it was about £30k, but I had a relatively small mortgage to begin with. For others it might be £100k/£150k/£200k

    Mortgage start: £65,495 (March 2016)
Cleared 🧚‍♀️🧚‍♀️🧚‍♀️!!! In 5 years, 1 month and 29 days
Total amount repaid: £72,307.03. £1.10 repaid for every £1.00 borrowed

Finally earning interest instead of paying it!!!
  • I know, I just thought it might be interesting to hear what people thought. But yes if you have a 300k mortgage your answer will be different to mine.

  • Sold my car today through we buy any car. My mum and dad have bought a new one and so I’ve got their old one. My previous car had about 110k miles on the clock, was 12 years old and was starting to clunk. I also spent £1,200 on it last year so it was getting to the point where I was going to end up spending more than the car was worth.

My parents old car, so my new one, is the same age, but only has about 73k miles. So that should buy me a few more years.

I got £700 for it which will arrive on Thursday and go into my ISA. My ISA is now a car fund, as at some point I will need to replace this one. But it’s now at (or will be when that gets paid in) £6,900. So I’ve made progress on that this year too.

Fighting the urge to go to M&S and buy a pack of mini Colin the Caterpillars.

  • The dentist was fine, I didn’t have to pay anything further on top of my £130 deposit. I’ve now joined their plan so I will pay £15 monthly and that covers me for one dentist visit and one hygienist visit per year. I now need to book an appointment to go to the hygienist to have my teeth blasted 😭😭😭

The money for my car has come in so that’s in my ISA. I’ll add £100 when I get paid and then I’ll be at £7,000.

I’m hoping to be able to put aside another £500 for a mortgage overpayment when I get paid as well.

Hibernation September has been going ok. I have actually cooked from scratch every day - or batch cooked and then frozen things - so that’s definitely been a benefit. Maybe I’ll do Hibernation October as well, and try and write in here more regularly, but I think it would be very boring: ‘Monday: I spent no money. Tuesday: I had to go and buy some milk. Wednesday: it rained and everyone annoyed me.’ 🙈

Realistically I have two more lots of pay to use for mortgage OPs - September and October.  And then November and December I have a number of birthdays as well as Christmas so I think I’ve got to use money for those things. I do buy Christmas presents throughout the year to try and spread the cost but I haven’t got everyone’s yet. Struggling to know what to get my dad!

In MSE news, I found an old gift card I hadn’t used and bought myself a new pair of leggings for walks/the gym. I have mended the holes in my current leggings so many times but they just keep coming back. I decided it was time to get rid of a pair, and as the gift card covered the cost of a new pair (except delivery) I have treated myself.

  • Had to go into town today to pay in an £8 refund for my car tax, and I also emptied my money box and paid in the £75 from that. I was going to use it to get my nephews Amazon vouchers for Christmas - hence paying it into the bank as I would have bought the vouchers online - but when I was out I saw a few things for my mum’s birthday in November and so I used the money for that. I am happy that her birthday is sorted.

I’m collecting a Big Shop tonight. If I have calculated correctly, I actually will only need to stock up on things like milk and bananas throughout the month. With the ingredients I’ve bought to meal prep and freeze, and with what’s already in my freezer, I should have most main meals sorted. So we’ll see how that goes.

I have been paid, and I have set aside £500 for a mortgage overpayment. I don’t think I’m going to pay it yet. Things are a bit tight at the moment and with diesel and food getting more expensive, I don’t want to make the OP and then get into difficulty later in the month. It just seems wise in the current climate to wait a little bit to make sure I don’t need it.

My only spends next week should be a haircut and the hygienist for a teeth cleaning. I estimate my hair will cost about £25 and the teeth cleaning should be £20. I filled up with diesel today so at least the car is full up.

I have told my friends that I will be hibernating in October and enjoying my mortgage. I do have a Pilates class organised with one of them later in October, which we fixed up back in August, and one has organised a wine tasting that I’ll take something along to. I had to tell them because there’s a couple of them who I go out to dinner with fairly often but I’m not doing that this month. I think we will have a movie night at someone’s house and pop a supermarket pizza in the oven instead.

  • I think it will definitely be a lot cheaper than going out! What do you usually do for yours – food/nibbles and wine, film night, that sort of thing? All ideas welcome 😄
