I guess it depends how quickly one wants the problem solved and have a working laptop
ie if the original warranty was on site then the issue would be very quickly solved in a few days whereas I could easily believe that engaging with Currys might take a month

Exactly - warranties aren't directly comparable with statutory consumer rights, and the cost can indeed be worth it, hence the comment highlighting that it's about value as well as cost. Having said that, OP did appear comfortable with sending the laptop away and was simply quibbling about whether the upfront refundable fee could be challenged, rather than the service level…
