Jaguar I-Pace Should I?

I’m looking at getting a Jaguar I-Pace (around a 2020 model in the £15–18k range) and wanted to get honest opinions from owners . do you actually recommend it, and is it still worth it today? Also curious how the battery and real-world range compares to newer EVs like BYD, which seem more efficient and newer tech-wise. From what I’ve seen, the I-Pace has a bigger battery (~90kWh) but is less efficient, so newer BYDs often get better range despite smaller batteries.

I think you would get better information on an I-Pace forum.

    I wouldn't ;)

I just got rid of my Stellantis EV because it was suffering from some of the many well documented problems, and there is an interminable wait for diagnosis, and Stellantis are regarded as more reliable than Jaguar…..

Ideally you want something with an intact manufacturer warranty like Kia & Hyundai or one with a service activated warranty like Suzuki & Toyota.

Alternatively, one that is proven reliable like a Tesla.

I bought a Dacia- it has a service activated warranty for years 4-7, but an I-Pace is leagues better in terms of comfort, looks and features, you wouldn't want a Dacia if you are considering an I-pace!

I want to go back to The Olden Days, when every single thing that I can think of was better.....

I would say maybe, but with your eyes open.

Jaguar reliability isn't the best and that includes the I-Pace. It's known for a fair few electronic and/or software gremlins. Everything from not able to fully charge, air suspension issues and has had more than it's fair share of recalls, one of which was a major safety issue for thermal overload of the battery leading to possible fire.

It was a fairly unique car and certainly unique and bespoke to Jaguar. I suspect a lot of the flaws were left to public to iron out.

Dealers are stretched, often with long waits for workshop time and spare parts are sporadic. So repairs can be slow and laborious.

As it's a few years old, hopefully it's either a good one or most of it's issues have been sorted but you would need to factor in what you'll do if it does have problems.

Where is the car coming from, a Jaguar dealer? What's the warranty like? Is there any specialists near by? (they are few and far between)

Personally, I probably wouldn't be tempted myself. There are far better alternatives out there like the Tesla.

If you have deep pockets then I understand that they are a great car (when they are running right).

Only buy one with a Jag warranty - no third party warranty will cut it - repairs can be catastrophically expensive, into five figures.

"Real world range" is a meaningless statistic in the world of EVs. Once you go on a long journey then efficiency and charging curves are what matter. An i-pace charging at 100kW with 2.5m/kWh efficiency will see you adding 250 miles/hour at peak charging (which may only be for ten minutes). A BYD Seal charging at 150kW with 4m/kWh will add 600 miles/hour at peak charging. Regardless of "range" - you'll spend more than twice as long waiting for your i-pace to charge on a long journey.

  • So you’re basically saying if I get a Jaguar I-Pace I should go through Jaguar for the warranty, but the battery tech is still behind newer EVs. I do like the design and the price drop (around £18–20k), but what better electric options are there in that range, ideally not Tesla?

What's your use case? How many miles are you covering a year? What is your daily commute like?

Any reason why you wouldn't go the Tesla route? They are the benchmark and come with their own charging network (which I generally use exclusively)

  • 10,000 miles a year maybe a bit more , not a fan of elon, don’t feel comfortable funding something i don’t align with

Everyone who buys a Jaguar does so in the belief theirs is the one which will be trouble free.

Been there, got the T shirt, never again - mine wasn't the one (not an ipace),

I'd reconsider. For 200 miles a week a Toyota/Lexus plug in hybrid may be worth looking at,

If you bought a second hand Tesla, you wouldn't be funding Elon, the original purchaser did that….

However, I couldn’t get on with everything being on the touchscreen, and all the premium features being behind multi-thousand £ paywalls to unlock them (but they are already there, just not activated)

Maybe look at the BMW ix3, or the ix if the ix3 is too small- even an i4 if you don't want the SUV style, BMW did get a very good reputation from the original i3, they may still be trading on that, but I've not read as many horror stories about BMW EVs as Jaguar and there are plenty of BMW specialists about.

When it comes to the Tesla and the touchscreen, I thought that would be very odd but it becomes second nature extremely quickly. The system is far more intuitive than fears might suggest.

As for the premium features being behind a paywall. For those that want them, the premium features are not particularly expensive per week. I have a TM3 and do not pay for any of the premium features but the "standard" level of features / equipment / specification matches the top-of-the-range for the majority of other cars.

The only multi-£k premium features are the two levels of increased self-driving provision. The standard self-driving provision is already comparable to the majority of the market top-of-the-range models. For those that chose them, the two levels of increased self-driving provision are one-off payments so no different to choosing trim level L, LX or GLX on other models of car. The only difference is, you can buy the L version and pay later to upgrade to GLX version rather than being a one-time only choice.
