Grandad Died, Will British Gas cut the supply?
Hello all,
Grandad died and had his electricity and gas with BG. I am frightened to tell BG of my granddads death as the company may cut the utilities off. The house is currently empty and we have not done very much as yet.
I called Thames Water, and they were brilliant,
I know Grandad has Electricity, Gas and Homecare with BG. has anyone had any experiences in dealing with the company?
The house is currently empty, so no one is there.
Grandad sadly passed away in the summer of 2025.

Did grandad own the house?
Has his estate been settled or is it still in administration/probate?
Assuming grandad owned the property, grandad's estate is liable for the utility bills until the house is sold or passed to whomever inherits it, at which point they become liable. There will be standing charges to pay plus for any metered usage up until the point of sale.
It would be up to the executor's of grandad's estate to pay and notify any utilities as and when appropriate to do so.
Most companies have a bereavement department you (or the executor) can ask to speak with who would help you deal with this.

And no, nobody "cuts it off".

If the property is empty, has the house insurance been changed to reflect that? Is someone visiting the property regularly?

As there is no will (and no executor), has it been decided who will administer the estate?
This thread would be better placed in the Death's, Funerals and Probate forum. I'll ask for it to be moved so you can get more specific help.

No, the house insurance has not been notified as yet, but thank you for stating this. I am visiting the property once a month to collect mail. I have used the one intouch service, so some people are aware

So sorry to hear of your loss.
What's happening to the bills since last summer? Have you/anyone informed your Grandad's bank? 🤔
