In my experience gates aren't usually audibly announced, you need to actively monitor the screens. I go to gate as soon as it is listed, no hanging around - even if I've got to wait at the gate for 30mins. It's rare for all departure boards to crash simultaneously (and to stay that way for an extended period)

Heathrow (where I often fly from) tends to have a time when the gate will be announced on the departure board, so I keep an eye on that.

I also get notifications from Google on my phone about my gate as I hold my boarding pass in my phone and have the apps for the airlines I use which also offer notifications - did none of you have these?

Edit: this is the type of notification I get on my phone.

I normally monitor the gate through the airline mobile app, it shows up before the board updates. British airways send notifications, easyjet sends notifications. I imagine the others do too. I'd have ran to check another board, as one crashes doesn't often mean server level crash.

Sorry you missed it, must be really disappointing. I'd still try my insurance and see what happens.

There’s similar thread on TripAdvisorabout Stansted Airport back in June where someone missed their flight because of the board saying relax. The difference there being that the boards didn’t go down.

There are also a number of people on the thread saying don’t rely on the app because that can be wrong as well.

All shall be well, and all shall be well, and all manner of things shall be well.

Pedant alert - it's could have, not could of.

I was unable to access the boarding pass via the Ryanair app because it was a group booking made via a travel agent. We went to ask someone the gate number when all the screens crashed. This board was still being displayed after the screens came back up.

This was Stansted airport, also managed by Manchester Airport Group, hence the message to "relax". The man on front of me at Ryanair Customer Services was due to fly to Krakow, the man behind me had missed his emergency flight home after his mother in law had died that morning. The fault was not the airline's but the airport's. After speaking to Ryanair, we spoke to the MAG information team and they gave me a card and advised us to complaint to MAG. Has anyone else experienced this

What was the airport's website saying about the gate?

You checked in at 15:30 and expected the gate to be announced at 16:40

What time does the "after 90 minutes the board crashed so we asked a member of staff" start and finish? Is that 90 minutes form when you checked in (so ending 17:00) or 90 minutes from when you expected the gate to be announced (so ending 18:10)?

    What time was your flight?

The board crashed about 17.00. The flight was scheduled for 17.40.

On that timeline I'd have been at the gate at around 17:00 - so would have been looking at the departure boards actively/getting twitchy from 16:15 - 16:30

As an example this flight to Chicago leaves Heathrow at 11:00, it's 09:45 and the gate is announced. If I was getting this plane, I'd be heading down to the gate now, an hour and a quarter before departure.
