    Just to confirm:

If I click on the OP's link:

    https://www.bbc.com/audio/play/live/bbc_radio_fourfm

.. on my Android phone while running Firefox I can stream BBC Radio 4 from the bbc.com/audio site without being redirected to BBC Sounds (and without logging in to my BBC account).

OP might want to try using Firefox on their phone for this, and see whether it works for them too?

If they still have the problem, adding the NoScript plugin to Firefox will let them disable scripting

I can now listen to Radio 4 using the link I mentioned, but it's left me a little confused.

I looked in Chrome settings for Scripting but didn't find anything.
But under Site Settings there is a Desktop Site item.
In this it was set to Request Mobile View, but underneath there was an item to Always Request Desktop Site for BBC. (I don't remember doing this. I've used the phone a couple of times to look at BBC Sport, but can't ever remember tinkering with settings for it).
Anyway, it didn't seem to be working.
I selected Request Desktop View, and after that I was able to access Radio 4 without any problem.

Thanks for all the help, I learnt a bit more about mobile phones as well as being able to listen to the radio.

I does strike me that you are going to a lot of trouble to use an inferior interface; I would recommend giving Sounds a fair chance.
