General Comments About Santander

Morning All,

I’m mulling over opening a current account with Santander. It would run side by side with my NatWest account and give me some extra flexibility. Has anyone got any comments good or bad about the bank?

Pretty much the set-up I have (albeit with an RBS main current account).

All income goes into RBS, all regular bills (utilities, council tax, mobiles) out of Santander Edge. The cashback on these just about covers the £3/mth fee, also offset by the 6% available on up to £4k in the Edge Saver.

Current account not needed, but the Edge Credit Card gives cashback and is a good travel card.

Santander app works well, not a fan of their online site but that's true of most bank's web access.

The "Rewards" offering is much like other bank's, great if you want monthly Laithwaites wine cases or cheap chain pizza/pasta.

Never had a problem with "held" payments as reported by others but I'm not shifting more than a grand or so a month all in.

Been with them for many many years and never had an issue, other than a very rare transaction confirmation requiring a phone call when moving savings around. £100k daily transaction limit (£25k individual transaction). Instant faster payments. I have just the free current account, I dont pay for extras. No reason not to choose them.

I’ve been with RBS in the past and have no complaints. I was considering returning to them for the extra account, but NatWest closed my local branch recently, so to have two bank accounts with no branch access was a non-starter. Barclays has also gone which leaves Lloyds, Nationwide or Santander. Out of that mix I like the look of Santander.

I like the look of the transaction limits! 25k is more than enough for me. With NW you set the transaction limits

I like Santander. My main current account is with them and been with them for 16 years as a main account. I recently downgraded to an everyday current account due to the 123 offering not making me money anymore. Great app. Really clear, High daily limit of 25k.

Also if you travel to Spain it's one of the only ways to avoid Spanish atm charges by using your card in a Banco Santander ATM in Spain. Finding an atm in Spain that doesn't levy a fee for using their machine is near impossible. But Santander you get to use their atm network worldwide fee free

My mother-in-law had a Santander account which my wife had POA over and I’m basing my considerations on what I remember about that. Can’t recall any problems as such but I remember my wife saying she went in branch for something but had to wait ten days for some appointment.

The £100k daily transaction limit is specifically within a 24 hour period.

I've been with Santander since the beginning, generally fine, been the odd bump in the road but I'd expect that with any financial institution. They continue to be my main current account.

I have had an account since it was Abbey National Building Society. I have had no real problems. The high transaction limits are good. The branch service is not. Nationwide is likely to be better for that. I suggest that you have a nose around the local branches, if that matters to you. Some people do not like the Santander website. It is more orange than Donald Trump, but that does not bother me.

I can only go on my own experience. But when I was dealing with my late father's estate. There was no comparison between the dealings I had with Santander for his old Abbey savings accounts and his bank Barclays. Barclays were an absolute nightmare to deal with whilst the kind and considerate service Santander gave me were second to none
