Not every meter needs changing every 10 to 20 years, theres a site you can look up your Make, Model and it will tell you how long before obsolete, ours is 40 years put in 42 years ago they dont makem like they used to.

Likewise i was bombarded with relentless calls, SMS, Texts, they even arranged fitting 9 years ago on 27 December against out explicit wishes. Nothing more than gov forcing it on households under the umbrella of saving you money - BS.
Only way out change your phone number and dont tell them, worked for me last 13 months.

It's not your meter, it's their meter. As part of your contract with them you have given them permission to install metering equipment on your premises and to maintain it or replace it when they need to. Youare currently in breach of that contract.

If you keep refusing them access, one of two things will happen. They'll get a magistrate's warrant and turn up with a locksmith to change it without your consent, or they'll disconnect you.

'' I'm on a good fixed tariff with them but I am beginning to regret it since I am so frustrated with their constant pestering despite my strongly repeated refusals.''

If you're so vexed about BG pestering you then just leave. switch.

You might have to pay £50/100 and not get as good a deal elsewhere but you'll have no more pestering from BG, though new supplier might start after a couple of months.

new supplier might start after a couple of months.

I would say 'inevitably' rather than 'might', since the new supplier has to meet the same targets and if the meter certification has expired it has to be replaced, come what may.

How much are you paying per unit? Gas isn't probably as variable as electricity, but smart meters do enable you to take advantage of more and cheaper tariffs.

One of my very early jobs was dealing with the recertification of electricity meters. We had lots of customers like you who didn't understand that we had a legal obligation to change them. All they did was delay matters and put up our costs, which everybody paid for in the long run.

You are certainly coming across as stessed by it.

The flip side is that there are two parties to a contract - and you are currently not upholding your side of things. It could be said that it's not a nice way for a customer to treat their supplier - deliberately standing in the way of them attempting to uphold their legal obligations.

Again - the question that has been asked previously - why not simply get the appointment arranged to get the end of life meter(s) swapped for up to date replacements?

My understanding is that gas meters do not have a certified lifetime, unlike electricity meters. Are BG saying that your gas meter MUST be changed, or is it just the usual generic spam inviting you to have a smart meter?

AFAIK there aren't any ToU gas tariffs so it's unlikely that you'd be losing out by not having a smart gas meter.
