Quoting posts changed
Has the way we can quote posts changed intentionally? Now it gives a preview instead of the whole quoted post, but there's no way to highlight specific parts of a post by emboldening etc. This was useful to respond to specific parts of a post.
Can this be brought back?

Hi @saajan_12
There's a thread here for feedback on the new Rich Editor
In the Rich Editor Help Guide, there's a post that suggest some workarounds to help you highlight the part of the post you want to highlight:

Can I be the first to post that the new Rich Editor is pants?
Seriously, I get that in order to quote a previous post I can no longer just hit "Quote" then edit the copied text, the text must be copied from the original then inserted as a quote. Not seeing how to include the author of the quoted text.
So I can copy and quote MSE_Stephen's post from the post above
but there's no attribution, which the old "Quote" button would include by default.

I wholly agree, the new system is absoluteley appalling.
It is also very difficult to add a link to other threads where the same / similar topic has arisen with creating excessive thread bloating, but here goes with two threads from earlier this morning.
I don't really want to bloat this thread but it is the necessary evil to demonstrate the inadequacies:
But we can now add a far wider range of emojis.

To selectively quote a post, you will need to manually copy the text into your reply.
You can create a quote area by selecting
¶, then clicking❝.You can split the quote by positioning your cursor where you want the break, then changing the
❝back to¶.
This will split the quote into separate sections.Tip:You can create the quote sectionbeforepasting in the text, or highlight the text afterwards to convert it into a quote.Tip:To quickly turn text into a quote, use the Markdown shortcut: type a>followed by a space, then your text. That's ^ the result of using the suggested method to selectively quote from the guide post. That is not actually quoting, but just formatting text as a quote. A core part of quoting is stating who it came from, and note @MSE_Stephen isn't mentioned at all in my "quote".
There really should be a button to click either after highlighting a section of a post to quote or whereby the text is editable.

It's absolutely dreadful - probably the worst quoting function I've ever seen on any forum ever.
Who on earth decided to implement this? And who signed off on the change?

I suspect that the young people who decide what updates are necessary (or "cool") don't really use quotes and don't understand why it's important to attribute them.
So long as it looks good who cares about the content or usability…

As well as the quoting posts simply not being visible via the graphical box, does that now quote the actual post as it stood at the time it was quoted, or does that just create a link to the post which changes if the post changes?
In this forum, it is helpful sometimes if the original post is quoted to allow context to remain for posterity.
Plus, the other already mentioned issues about unable to quote part of a post or highlight (bold) parts of a quote.
And it is very odd that sometimes when viewing a thread with a quote, the quoted post can be expanded with a dropdown arrow whereas other times there is just the graphical box and you have to scroll upthread to find the quote to read it all.

Having played with this more, I'd posit that there simply is NO quoting ability. What is really a link to a post is now mislabelled as a quote. The purposes of quoting are
- referring to comment exactly as posted, unaffected by subsequent changes which may change the meaning.
- making it easy to read the quoted text together with the response without having to jump to a linked post and then scroll back down.
- refer to a specific part of a longer post while still crediting the original poster.
- Highlight specific parts of a post by say emboldening while still crediting the original poster.
None of these are possible.

I agree.
Like I said earlier it's as if the people writing the new editor don't understand what a quote is or how it needs to be used
They certainly don't seem to understand how quotes were used - properly I might add - on this forum

Just to add further weight to this, we need the ability to have partial quotes that are properly attributed to the original poster.
This is not the first time this problem has come up and it was rolled back last time and that needs to happen again.
Functionality is more important than looks when you are trying to help people…
